A discussion on wiring the cockpit for spreader lights, electric downrggers, bilge pumps, etc, etc...

From: C-LionRay Sent: 4/6/2003 7:43 AM
I need to run power to my new bilge pump that will be mounted in the stern near the transom in the depression by the plug. I also need to wire my electric down rigger and would like to wire in some docking lights.
Should I put in a distribution panel? If so which one should I use to make sure it is water tight?
Should I come off the battery switch that is located in my Starboard lazerette or should I run it from the panel at the main cabin helm?
Maybe I am overthinking this and should just wire them up to the house battery directly and put in inline fuses?....

I'm looking for the voice of experience....

Thanks in advance...

All a distribution panel is is a fancy way to put a switch and fuse on every circuit.

Wiring them directly, as you suggest, isn't a yachtie but if fused is just as safe. A lot depends on how much panel room you have. And you can buy a lot of waterproof toggles and fuse holders for the price of a small distribtion panel.....

Mr. F.,

I used a Blue Sea Systems fuse box (link here) wired directly to my 1-2-All switch. Mounted in the lazarette with the 1-2-All.

I've got two electric downriggers and my trim tab pump wired to it - works great, easy and cheap set up.

One blurry pic here.
