just aquired the c-80 raymarine system and am curious about placing the gps puck to the SIDE of the radome about 12" away on the arch. am i asking for interference? as i understand, it could be in the lobe of the radar signal. i have noticed some of the "mushrooms" mounted behind the dome and just wonder if i haven't read enough or what? any suggestions out there Question thanks ahead of time Very Happy

Mike-

Hi!

Take a look at this and see if your question isn't answered there:

Radar causing interference with other electronics?

Y'all have a good day!

Mike,

I attached a link to the Raystar 125 GPS Receiver Handbook and if you scroll down a little (page or two) you can see where they suggest you install the GPS puck. The key is to keep it out of the Radar signal.

http://www.raymarine.com/raymarine/SubmittedFiles/Handbooks/Navigation/81247_3www.pdf

Hope you find it helpful.

Forgive me if I just ask a really stupid question. You do realize that the beam shown going forward in the photo in actuality rotates and as that beam goes around it hits the sides as well as behind? I'd hate to see you burn that puppy out.

I have the C-80 system and two GPS pucks. The pucks are mounted at the front of the shelf above the bunk access door and work perfectly.

Don I think the pic is trying to show that you can go above or below the radar doom, not side to side. Its not that good of a pic but thats what I get from it.

The raymarine 2kW unit instructions says the beam is roughly 12.5 degrees above or below a horizontal plane, and 360 degrees around the radome.

Just be sure it is out of the radar beam! I don't see any reason to install it above the radar--in fact there are reasons not to: More motion, danger of hitting it, some potential of interference from radiation on the leads of the GPS. I find in most C Dories, if you keep the shelf clean, that both sirius and GPS internal antennas work fine.

Sneaks,
are you sure the signal goes 360 degrees Laughing Question hell, the picture shows hit only goin' strait frunterds Exclamation
i believe the puck mounted where i put it will be safe. 12 degrees is gonna miss it by a mile and, if you get by with two pucks anywhere near the v-berth shelf, i figure my puck, parallel with the base of the radome will be OK Cool
Gypsy and i have had a busy day...time to Beer Cigar

LOL! Mike, I've got decades of experience in electronics, a big chunk in radar and Navaids, and the rest in early hard drives and elint (electronic intelligence). You wouldn't believe some of the questions I've fielded from folks who consider electronics as incomprehensable as I consider the internal workings of a marine outboard. That's why I started out with it being a stupid question, but I really wanted to know if your arch mounted GPS antenna was gonna be high enough or low enough to clear the beam or not. Hell, if you drove a Dodge Ram I might have been even more concerned....

Have a good one. Thumbs Up

Don
