I've written the whole story here:
http://www.navagear.com/2007/05/dscvhfmmsi-headache-resolved/
But the short version is this:
You cannot update the MMSI number in a Ray54 DSC VHF radio without shipping the unit to Raymarine. Nobody else can do it; not you, not a dealer/installer. I would love to be proved wrong, so if anybody knows otherwise, let us know!
You cannot enter three MMSI numbers into a Ray54 radio. You can enter one, and then it's locked.
Boat/US can transfer the old MMSI number to you, if the previous owner releases it. Mac told me about this, which he discovered when he went to obtain a MMSI number for Island Ranger. Indeed, this can be done, but not online; you have to call Boat/US (Kristin Loyd: 800-563-1536).
This helps those of us who buy boats with Ray54 radios installed. It doesn't help those who got one MMSI number from Boat/US, and later applied for an FCC license and received a new MMSI number. You folks still have to send your radio to Raymarine. _________________ Timothy R. R. Flanagan

Tim,
I believe this is true of most of the VHF radios. What I have been told they have to be sent back to the factory to be reprogramed. _________________ Bob Austin

Thanks for the info, I have a Ray 54 and had no idea. I sure think
I set it correctly twice. I have had no luck finding out the baud rate
for the gps input to the radio as I wanted to use it for some ham radio
equipment. Local wise cant find a real tech person just sales people.
One unit calls the info txd and rxd and Raymarine calls it + and -.
I guess calling the Raymarine number may be what I have to do..

The Raymarine number I called was 800-539-5539, and I left a message for Fran Mitchell. I got a call back from...somebody else...it was 7 am local time, and I was barely awake. Anyway, he's the one who confirmed that the only way to reset it was to ship it in. He reassured me that the turnaround was very fast, and if it was still under warranty I would only be out about $4 for shipping to Raymarine. |

Tim, it has been my experience that raymarines turn around are very short. They track your unit the whole time and if you need to call about it they will put you on the phone with the tech that worked on your unit. Not some phone office puck with a Q.&A. book in his hand. I was really pleased with their service and I am not happy with anyones costumer service. _________________ Thomas J Elliott
