The boat is back on the trailer and hopefully the extension will be finished next week.
More photos in my album.
Some of the metal fabrication may take a little longer. Mike my brother helped rope a buffalo at the ranch and he got the worse of it. Just a few broken ribs and brused ever inch of his body but otherwise he is OK.

Hmmm. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

So I guess that makes your brother a C-owieboy! While living in North Dakota 20 years ago, I was involved with the building of 2 squeeze chutes for working them critters. This was a federal project and the chutes were to travel Wyoming, Montana & the Dakotas doing what ever needed done. They were enormous and everything was hydraulic powered. Buff never had a chance!
Boats looking good too.

I am still making progress on the boat. It never seems to go as planned. Seems like something always comes up to pull me away from the project. It has the final gel coat on but still needs to be sanded out and polished. Still have some screw/mounting holes to filled, they had nothing to do with the hull extension. I am making changes to some of the mounting hardware and equipment.
My brother is feeling much better after his episode with the Buffalo, so it should start going a little faster.
Mike & wailedcentipede, you guys are so right about the Buffalo. He is a big and powerful animal but a person never realizes just how big and powerful until you see one up real close. Then he is scary.

a)What a project! What reseults! You got balls --and the skill to back it up.
b)It looks fantastic, proportional at last, no longer Toonerville Trolley.
c)Didn't you mention planning some additional revision just inside of the transom? I only remember that it sounded good and that I'd considered it for my 16 should I get over my snit. (My CRS worsens.)
d)I had two shows to do but should soon test my copy of your permatrim and keep my word to tell you about it. |

a) Roping a Buffalo...? In my neighborhood that would fall under the "stupid hurts" catagory....or...if ya gonna be stupid....ya gotta be tuff!! Not that I have ever tried any similar stunts.... generally prefanced with ...."watch this yall..." and, like your brother... a bit of recovery time would follow. Sure am glad he is getting better and nothing long term... I had to laugh... Sorry.
b) Dave: How/what are you going to use to paint/finish out the interior of the boat to make it all match. During C-Byrd restoration process...like you, I had many...many holes to fill/patch...and the interior looks a bit like a dalmation fire house dog.... Sure would like to know what you are going to use/apply. Hope it is simple...
c) Intesting how your "18" looks so much like my 18 Angler. I guess yours is the "narrow beam" version...as to stay with true "dory" lineagle. And I thought I owned hull #14, the last 18 Angler produced.
d) Great looking work Dave... I can not wait to see your eyes sparkle when ya launch her!!
Here Here to a wonderful and gutsy undertaking!! You should be proud.

Hi Dave,
I have been enjoying following the progress of your hull extension. Have you had a chance to launch your "new" hull yet and have a sea trial? Don't leave us in suspense!
Best regards,

I/we finally finished the hull extension last week. It took a lot longer than anticipated. One of the people I relied on for part of the work took waaay loooooooonger for his part than promised. However, he and Ben did a fantastic job on their parts. I will post photos sometime later this week or early next week. It looks like a brand new boat.
Now my brother and I can start with the extra additions we will make. Because of the delay with one of the parties, my brother (Mike) and I will not be able to complete our parts in the amount of time we anticipated. Both of us get real busy from the middle of April until early July, so the boat will have to be worked on as time permits.
Leo - one of the people helping me with this project was Ben Toland, the person that designed and built the Toland 18-8, that you owned. I don’t know if you still own it, but there was only ten of them built. I would think he (Ben Toland) will eventually get back into the boat business with a new boat design. There is way too much talent there not to do another boat design.
Pat – sorry I did not respond sooner about the interior of the boat. We knocked the grit off the floor so it was not so rough then filled in the holes with fiberglass filler, then rolled on a coat of gel-coat with a little sand mixed with it. Then sanded it slightly to remove the rough peaks, then rolled on another coat of gel coat. I will use something similar to this for the deck/floor.
Barefoot – I have all kind of additional plans for the boat. I had not been able to do any of them until the extension was completed, so I have had a lot of time to think about it. It is probably a good thing because I have modified the additions and believe some are really good improvements over my original designs.
Originally I had hoped to be able to make the Poulsbo gathering in March of this year but knew it was a long shot. Figured I would surely be able to make the Cathlamet gathering in the middle of this month. I missed it. Now it looks like I may not even make the Lopez gathering. Looks like Bellingham will be my first gathering after the extension.
After all is done, I still have to have a new camper back canvas made.
Wish I had more time to work on the boat and be able to catch up on the post on this site. I am about 2000 behind.

Hi Dave,
I agree with you completely. Ben Toland is an artist that happens to design and build delightful boats. My Toland 18-8 was a sweet boat, and I am still amazed how Ben could design a boat that is less than 19 feet long and still have full standing headroom without looking top-heavy. From the bow to the transom, every line is graceful.
I hope you will post some photos of your new 18 when you launch it. I am impressed with your moxie to take on this project!
Best regards,
Leo |
