Mercury Verado

Does anyone in the community have experience with a Mercury Verado? How reliable are they? Does the supercharger make up for fewer cubic inches?

I don't normally refer folks to another forum--but The Hull Truth--will have a lot of information on the Verado's. There are some who love them, and then there are others. I suspect with the recent addition of the Sea Ray Dealer ship you will see the C Dory products offered with the Mercury engines more. It will be interesting to see how they compare.

Another place to look is Continuous Wave, a Whaler forum due to the large numbers of Mercuy powerplants on them (another Brunswick teamed boat/eng).

I have found (in general) the Whaler crowd is very favorable towards C-Dory.

the 90 Veradito is an entirely different engine (heavier, bigger) than the two 90 hp 4-stroke Mercs I own.

The two I have, have been absolutely flawless. Great power, completely reliable, fast, easy to start, and trim up to get into extremely shallow water (I've surprised kayaks and flats boats). On this last trip to Okeechobee I got some bad gas and it sputtered a bit while chewing through that and just kept running. I understand the old 4-strokes are a Yamaha powerhead mated to a Merc lower unit.

I'm pretty conservative, when a new engine comes out I wait a few years until I'm sure it's been de-bugged before buying.

I have heard that the Verados require a special hydraulic steering system made by Mercury. The after market units will not bolt up to a Verado. Anybody know if this is true?

Jimbo-

I believe the really big motors have power steering incorporated into the motor system which would make it specific to the Mercury motor and therefore not compatible with generic hydraulic systems.

I haven't received my boat yet, but it has the 150 Verado. It is super-charged and has its own hydraulic steering system...that much I know.

I test drove it last Friday and it worked well and was fairly quiet. To be honest my last boat had an i/o so I don't have anything to compare an outboard to, but it wasn't something that I thought was annoying or drew my attention.

The linkage was very smooth and the motor was very responsive.

Once I get the boat and have a chance to run it through its paces, I'd be willing to answer questions about it.

One last thing...because it is so new I opted for the extended warranty. Hopefully it was wasted money Wink
