Took my new TomCat 255 out today.....on the way to my berth with full tanks..water and fuel....two people... at the Berkeley Marina my Honda Fuel Digital Fuel Management gauges showed I was consuming 8.5 gallons per hour....I was going 25MPH so..............that computes out to .........2.94 MPG!!!!!!!
sounds good to me!!
I know under most conditions maybe 2-2.5mpg is the norm
BUT At 4 times the WEIGHT of my 22 Angler 2000lbs vs 8000lbs
.... VERY GOOD!!
I could only get at the most maybe 3 to 4 MPG pluging along at 15 to 20 MPH
with the 2000 lb 22 Angler!!
Bigger is better...if its a TomCat

Dick,
That sounds really good. Must be a reason for it. What was the tide doing?

Dick;
With a good tidal direction I was getting about 3mpg with my Tom Cat. Over the long haul I could get 2.3-2.5 @ 25 kts. My Seaswirl, 4500 lbs w/ 225 Yamaha 4 strk didn't get this good of economy. Did you install Permatrims?
I know you don't have a trailer but, we are having the Bay Area Tuna Clubs season kick off party 5-6-07 up here in Eureka. If you would like to meet some of the local tuna fishermen come on up. It's a great party with lots of tuna talk and education from some of the old salts.

I am not sure if the Honda fuel flow system can be calibrated. I did check my Navman system with multiple long trips and fill ups to be sure it was correct (within 2%). Also I believe that Dick has the Permatrims--and it is possiable that helped with the outstanding fuel mileage. I believe that at least one of the magazine tests got that type of mileage also.

My average numbers are consistant with the rest--2.3 to 2.4 miles a gallon--which makes me very happy since a comperable size express cruiser (18 degrees V deadrise) with the same weight and HP got 1.6 to 1.7 mpg under similar conditions.

Thanks for the report.

fuel mileage, when we went to the bahama's on our 25 c-dory with twin honha 90's.. it took us 5 hours to make the 100 mile trip and we burned 41 gallons of fuel..equals 2.44 miles to the gallon or 8.2 gallons per hour.. it was the same on the return trip, another 100 miles with the same average..these two runs are the only time we have checked the mileage...tucker

It can be a bit dicy, in the beginning, to determine the exact miles per gallon. I was ecstatic initially over my mileage readout up in Seattle until I noticed the Honda Digital guage was clicked to read only one engine!!

Still, a pretty efficient setup in moderate seas so far.

When all are giving their mpg figures are you using statute (land) miles or nautical miles? 15% difference.

The mileage I read off the flow meter is in nautical miles. What I do on fill up to fillup is in statuate miles. The reason is that my GPS is set to Knots--and the ICW is in statuate miles--For example one run we have done several times is our home to Apalachicola about 200 statuate miles from the marina near our home where we fill up and the marina in Apalachicola where we fill up on that end.
