Warren,
I have the SeaKey system on a boat. It has notified me twice of a dead battery while the boat was at anchor and I was ashore. I fortuanately have never needed it in an emergency but I test it twice a year, when they call to acknowledge the test they always have my location accurately and know the boats heading and speed.
I do not believe it would work as well as an EPIRB because if you had a major breach of the hull and lost her out from underneath you quickly I'm not sure it would have time to send the call.
The EPIRB would continue to transmit your location even if you were in the water.
The SeaKey is nice but if your thought is for an emergency, I would stay with some type of EPIRB. _________________ Bob Arrington

Steve's comment on fire arms reminded me that at times we do have a North American Arms .22 mag 5 shot revolver(.22 mag hollow points or snake shot) in our ditch bag--but there are certain places where one cannot carry a pistol (Like Canada, some of the US states). This is a very small SS pistol single action. _________________ Bob Austin

I am in a somewhat unique situation. I have a hearing impairment and can't use the VHF radio. I also boat by myself quite often. So I am always on the lookout for ways technology can help me compensate for my disability. If I got a SeaKey it would be for use in addition to an EPIRB. The SeaKey would be for use when I am on board but having an emergency of some kind and the EPIRB would be for if I was in the dinghy or -- egads! -- in the water.

We decided that for our needs, Mustang suits would be the better way for us to go. We might buy some survival suits as well. The Mustang suits are something we are able to use fairly often. I used them quite a bit in the Arctic and have had time in the water with them on. They are not as good as survival suits but I like the durability and PFD aspect of being able to have them on. What are others using? _________________ Steve and Colleen Torrence
