I took my kicker off , as the boat is going in for bottom paint. I noticed that there is warning on one side of the shaft that says "this side up." I looked at the 40 hp and it has the same instruction. The other day I was at Alki and watched the Coast Guard put one of their big inflatables on a trailer. As part of their procedure they raised the engines and then turned them so the "this side was up. My question is this; when my kicker is on the transom and up does it make a difference which way it is turned? Thanks. _________________ MartyP

Marty,
To the best of my knowledge the "this side up" warning relates only to laying the unit down horizontally. If you lay it down incorrectly, the oil from the crankcase will spill out into some areas where it should not be. Any slight or partial tilt position while the unit is attached to the transom would not be a problem.
