I have a new angler coming and I'm putting a 90 HP Yamaha on it for main power. I have a 9.9 kicker, but is that strong enough to get me back to land should something happen to my main power? Should I get a 15 hp? what would you old hats recommend?

jasonevans-Well, kinda yes, and kinda no. My experience with my old 8hp kicker was somewhat weather dependent. If I was on a big lake and it wasn't blowin' to bad, no problem. About the same on a large bay depending on wind and tidal flow. On rivers, downstream certainly no problem but going upstream against a strong current....pretty iffy.

Depending how old and what shape your 9.9hp is in, you might want to give it a try first, it might be just fine. Another option would be to get a high-thrust model with that big prop.

AHA!! Another fine Yamaha moment presents itself! :D

Well ya did good on the---selecting your motor, son! ... now...

I use the Yamaha 8 high thrust (T-8) up here in Alaska and I would dare say it will push you through anything you are willing to brave. It might be slow when trying to bust through some nasty waves and tide, but it aint gonna poop-out on ya.... (for that matter neither is your new main engine) My buddy has the Yamaha 9.9 high thrust on his big hog of a boat (it weighs about 6000 pounds minimum!) and he got back when he blew his 350 V-8 way out in the Prince William Sound---some 80 miles out of port. In my opinion, the 9.9 is overkill! the 8 is perfect!

I believe only Yamaha has the TRUE high thrust kicker. Compare the lower units on all the so-called "high-thrust" models and you will see why. :)

Greg, I don't know what you do for a living up there, but I think you may have missed your true calling. You should be in marketing for Yamaha.

Is your 90 Yamaha a 2 stroke or 4? My concern would be with the weight on the transom. Just my 2 cents worth!

Bill

PS - I don't drink either! Embarassed
