A friend stop by and we talked about it at length. There is a
local group that rebuilds outboards. They charge a flat rate
and rebuild the entire thing and have a good reputation. Plus,
this will be a good winter job for them, etc. So, if we decide
to put in an offer on the Tomcat, we'll simply factor in their
rebuild price. The bottom line is that a 110 hour Yamaha shouldn't
have these kinds of problems, so whatever the issue is exactly,
it is most likely corrosion based == rebuild.

Thanks for all the replies! Mike

Good thinking, Mike -

With the going price of a good 24 TC in the low 50s, gotta be a reason an owner will consider 40K less the broker's take (usually +/-10%). And the fact that the boat is still available at a low-ball price gives me the itch. Who knows, but she could be a hurricane babe and ingested some salt water. I loved my 24 TC and there are several satisfied owners on the Brat site so it is certainly worth investigating.

Another thing to consider - if indeed it has had a salt bath, there is much to do in addition to engines. GET THE HISTORY OF THE BOAT. I once bought a boat that had sunk in it's slip. Replacing wiring, all electical connections, etc. (and a bunch of etc's) can make engine rebuilding a very small portion of the job.

This old goat has BTDT soooo many times!
