The spammers, pornsters and druggies have been signing on en masse lately, and a good half of them seem to be using the @gmail domain for their registration email address. I guess Google made it too easy for them. We also see a lot of Yahoo addresses used by the undesireables.

Whenever a spammer signs on using an email address from their own site that is obviously made for their purposes, we can ban the entire domain and slow them down for a while. Or anyone we have seen so far with a .ru suffix has been a spammer, so those get banned (if C-Dory gets a dealer in Russia, those poor folks will have some problems getting in here). But banning a popular domain like Google or Yahoo isn't a good idea because a lot of genuine folks use them. And banning the individual complete addresses isn't too effective because most of them are just random gibberish created solely for the purpose of spamming forums.

But, since Bill is out of cyberspace for the moment, I had me a vision of nerdness. Because Google is the greatest offender, and it is fairly new, I was thinking of adding the entire domain to the ban list. Hence this Poll to see how many of the active users are registered with the @gmail domain. The Yahoo domain is also included in the Poll. (Hotmail doesn't get used much by the spammers. I guess what Bill says about MS being the best is true.) If the number of registered members is very small, we might pursue a change in the signup policy to require an email address from an individual's ISP instead of a web-based freebie. That might slow down the spammers and bots enough to let me spend more time reading the posts and less time scouring the memberlist.

As always, though, remember that unless you provide your personal contact info on the public message boards, the software here still prohibits people from finding your actual email address.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,
I have 2 email accounts. One I use for everything I sign up for(free yahoo account) and one I use for my personal e-mail. I have to say that in the last year I am getting more spam on my paid account too. I for one am willing to do whatever it takes to get rid of as much spam as possible

Mike,

I use none of those webmail services, but here's some beta on how my ISP deals with them ... now and then both Hotmail and Yahoo webmail have been on the RBL, which Pacifier (aka Infinity Internet) uses to annoy them when they have a client who is an abusive spammer, black holing all email from them when one of theri servers gets blacklisted.

I have been unable to receive email from my son, who uses Hotmail, for up to a week at times, this last year.

I think whichever/however you do this, some folks will be inconvenienced.

My vote is for you to do what you have to do.

Can you get rid of spammers and druggies, but leave the pornsters. We retirees have to have something to do in our spare time, you know! Twisted Evil

OK Mike, since my email option wasn't in the poll, I changed to my ISP.

You may want to indicate in the registration process that gmail, yahoo, and free email accounts are not acceptable registration options. Probably the easiest way to get around the spammers and the least disturbance to the already disturbed brats.

I use both Google and Yahoo (Google for c-brats) but have others I can use. Do what you have to, just give us some notice so we can switch.

Mike – you may find many of us using an email address from our domains. So my vote and theirs would be none of the above.

I really appreciate yours & Bills dedication to this site and effort in keeping undesirables off. Do whatever you think is necessary and if there is anything we can do to help, let us know. I’m sure most of the members here would agree.
