Well, got my first box full of coffee from Camano Island Coffee Company. Thanks Jim & Laurie Martinson.... Ya got me hooked! Now, I got a mix of differant flavors and bag sizes....some ground, some I will grind myself...
Storage: How do yall keep it fresh? We generally put it in a zip lock freezer bag, with the original packing bag inside of that, and stick it in the freezer. Friend of mine indicated that a freezer was bad for it?
Thoughts please. _________________ Patrick Byrd "Byrdman"

Pat, have never had much "old" coffee, guess I drink too much of it. Like vintage wine around here, the old stuff is last Tuesday...
Have kept it in the freezer for some time though (the coffee, that is, not the wine) with no discernable effects.

Ken - we evolved to boiling some water in the evening, filling a good thermos with hot water and then using a coffee press in the morning. Almost instant coffee and good tasting too.

Someone mentioned a French press, but didn't describe it further.
Most familiar is the larger French press -- you make the coffee, and then pour it into cups. There is a better way, if you don't already know about it.
Starbucks, and I believe REI, have a single-cup French press in a clear plastic, double-walled insulated cup.
Put in the coffee, fill with boiling water, screw on the lid, and slowly depress the plunger until it seats flush into the lid. Wait a few minutes, pop open the sealed opening on the lid, and drink straight from the press/cup! Couldn't be easier. (I know, it's still French . . . )
This thread reminds me of a neighbor years ago -- hospitable, but clueless. Asked if I'd like a cup of coffee -- "Sure", says I. A minute later (literally) he returns with a marginally hot cup coffee.
They prized 'efficiency' in their household. With each new jar of instant coffee (mistake #1), they removed some to make room and mixed in the 'appropriate amounts' of sugar and non-dairy creamer (mistakes #2 and #3). (I use the phrase 'appropriate amount' loosely here; in my book the 'appropriate amount' of non-dairy creamer is zero.) They then turn on the hot water tap (mistake #4; no hot water sink attachments back then), add a tablespoon of their special recipe (mistake #5), and voila, a 'fresh' cup of the absolute worst coffee you can possibly imagine (mistake #6)!
I literally had to turn the other way and bite my lip to keep from laughing out loud as he described this . . . (Wouldn't have been very gracious, would it?) Still cracks me up 25 years later!

Pat,
I have had good luck by vacuum-bagging whole or ground beans using my Food-Saver. I don't think a Zip-Lock bag is really very airtight. Freezers tend to really dry things out if any air can get in the bag. Most coffee comes packaged in a bag with a valve in it so they are not really airtight. I have kept it frozen up to two months and it tasted fine. _________________ Ken Trease

We cone-drip and drink a mega cuppa every morning -- no problem storing -- nothing much to store -- problem is finding a biffy. _________________ El and Bill (former live-aboards)

The problem now is finding good course ground coffee. I don't like the fine grind in the percolater pot.
And, yes, as noted above -- any additives is too much---- as I always said, "coffee ain't coffee, 'les it's coffee" _________________ Roger

...er, what's a 'biffy ??
Oh well....
For those of you who haven't observed the Professor making the Admiral's coffee in the morning (...yea, Every morning!), you're in for a treat.
Really, it's not that difficult:
Step 1: use approximately 1.5 pounds of fresh ground high-octane coffee
Step 2: pour scalding water every-so-slowly into the Melitta filter gizmo
Step 3: gently hand over the steaming first cup to the Admiral.
Step 4: Watch her spool-up to full operating speed....!
Step 5: Using the same grounds, there is Plenty of coffee remaining for an additional 8-10 cups of stout coffee!
NOTE: for those of you who served in the Navy - by the time you get down to about cup #5 or #6 the brew is fully qualified "Navy Coffee" ...just like the 'ol Chief used to drink!
Amazing!
Casey

Yep, as any sailor knows, one needs to keep the Admiral happy -- so the morning coffee ritual is essential in our cruising lifestyle -- and Casey's description is exactly right.
And, yes, the biffy is indeed the head -- and consuming such potent brew requires a few runs to the biffy in response. |

Now that is funny!
It has me wondering how I can find room for my Nespresso machine on the boat. _________________ "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln |

Coffee is a life staple. We had an 1800 watt inverter installed on Cocoon so we could use a small one cup Keurig coffee maker on board. |

Here's a previous thread on a nifty Latte Maker that we recently used most cold wet mornings in the Broughtons.
