well a friend gave us a nice name plate that would look great outside the cabin door. the skipper wants to unbolt that piece above there to be able to put nuts behind the screws to secure it. any thoughts on that or has anyone screwed anything into that piece.. it seems like it's made out of the door material..

Vic, I'd use 3M 5200 and tape it in place until it sets up. Mo betta than holes unless you have holes in the plate already and don't want to see them.

I believe it's 1/2" starboard right above the door. It's pretty hard to get 5200 to stick to that long term. I think that removing the piece and bolting through with countersunk holes on the reverse for the nuts would be the way to go.

The piece is made out of starboard material and is held on by two bolts. I attached a piece of starboard on the inside of the door by removing the outer piece, using longer bolts in the same holes and then reattaching throught the outer piece, the bulkhead, and the inner piece. Many others have done this to get an extra place to attach stuff above the door on the inside. I don't see any trouble with removing the piece, attaching the name plate, and then reattaching.
