I have a bruce anchor with approx. 16' chain and 300' rode, some how my rode is getting twisted up like a spring on a clock, Disgust I bought a swivel and plan to attach it to where the rode and chain join together, is this correct or should it go where the anchor and chain attach ?
Thank you for any advise............Big Dave.

I'd stick it between the chain and the anchor so it won't have to pass over the windlass you'll be installing Smile

Here is a anchor swivel that turns 360 degrees and also hinges 180 degrees that I found at Boaters World locally. It works great and I am providing an online link to another source; http://store.marinepartdepot.com/new316ststsm.html. Check the other swivels under the "Anchor Assessories".

Dave, no, I aint calling your spousal unit a windlass, but you may consider a windlass while you still have a wife Smile for fishing in the river it's the only way to go. I fought the urge to add one to the boat in spite of all of Tyboo Mikes cajoling, I finally weakend, one of the best additions ever.
That swivel that WGF posted is a dandy and can be found at Boaters World in Jantzen Beach for a reasonable price.

Big Dave,
I hope ment between the anchor and the chain so it will not run thru the drum of the windlass as B~C noted.

Sea Angel I don't have a windlass, so I don't need to worry about it going through one, the swivel is easy to move if I do get one or if the chain starts to twist. But I think the chain was twisting because the three strand rode would start to twist as soon as it received a load. Not only that these swivel things are cheap compared to anything else I have bought for Raven Dancer, it might be just as easy to install another one where you sugest at the anchor / chain connection.
I will keep you posted. I think the whole thing is weird because if I use my Columbia River anchor with the ball puller it doesn't twist. You would have to boat on the Columbia to know what a Columbia River anchor is, but for those of you who do know what I mean don't you think it is weird that it twist with the Bruce and not with the Columbia River anchor ??? Embarassed

do you use the anchor puller with the Bruce? if not, maybe the tension of the current against the ball keeps things from twisting. Watch out for drunken jet skiers as you past Willow Grove on your way to Catherderlamet...weza headed to the Brownlee for a few days of boaterhoming, kayaking and bass fishing Smile

I have seen damage to the type of swivel noted by Whalergofar--where the rode/chain takes a rapid change of direction (such as tidal current reverse)--and the pressure on the sides of the swivel caused distortion.

Also my experience with swivels, is that they don't work when under load (too much friction)--and most of the time, if you let the anchor slowly untwist as you bring it up, the twist will resolve. We tried the swivel on only one of our anchoring set ups and were not impressed, so took it off.
These anchors were considerably larger (75 lb CQR and 30 ton boat). The experience with lighter anchors and boats may be different.
