Dan-
Does it bother you in terms of not being able to see the motor's steering alignment when backing up?
(Maybe you aren't around tight docks and marinas enough to care!)

When boating near Camp Pendleton, I often wonder how (or if) the Marines modified the outboards on their inflatables so the telltale is directed almost vertical. It also exits with a lot of force - their telltales easily reach 5-6 ft. straight up. Something similar would easily be seen over your cooler on that nice rack.
Joe, a replacement wheel with a steering knob works wonders. It's so easy and quick to go lock to lock that way and you do get a bit of an indicator by the knob location .

Don-
Been hot and cold on the spinner knob! Good with girls in high school, yes and no on the C-Dory!
I added a knob top my replacement wheel at one point, but didn't like the extra bump on the wheel where the knob collar wraps around the wheel or the knob itself, except in reverse, where it was a great tool! (In reverse, I stand bettween the fron seat in the aisle and steer with my left hand in order to see things more clearly.)
Been thinking of a way to add the knob slightly inside the outer wheel on one of the spokes and make it turn down inward out of the way when not in use (?)
Good idea about the tell-tale! Plenty of pressure there to add an extension tube up into visible range. Could even add a electrical pressure-sensitive switch and a red monitor light on the dash as a back-up or alternative.

DOD,
With my Johnsons which are Suzukis under a Johnson cover you can turn the telltales 360 degrees. Are you able to do that with your telltale and shoot them upwards so you can see it? _________________ Dave S.

I'm in the process of doing a cooler rack ala' Dogon Dan, only making it out of the Home Depot plastic wood. Pockets are made for the support bar, the pallet is done. I'll pick up the 1" square stainless support bar today from a local vendor and then it's just a matter of installling it.
I don't know how the plastic wood is going to compare long term with the
decking material, but thought I would use it because of the light weight.
I'll post some pictures shortly in my album.
Super idea Dan! _________________ Mark on Mighty Bite |

I almost posted a reply to your post and photo, questioning your ability to take a photo of the cooler, then remembered you are a professional photographer so I figured your subject was really the view. _________________ Dave

Dan, Dave is right on the tell tail. You can articulate it in about any direction.
As to the pissing contest. This old duffer knows his limitations and will concede.
Oh! The motors? err, OK! |

The Twin Johnsons on "Sea Shift" are aimed "crossfire" at each other.........kind of a pissin' contest...
Heck, if you wanna have a bit of fun with it, aim it so when you come along side a float it'll shoot those standing by as you come in for a landing.... |

Nice mod and pictures DOD, I read an article recently that said there really isnt a reason for telltales anymore because of the sophistication of the engines and warning systems but that they keep them for long time boaters who dont feel comfortable without them.
I am the same way; have to hear it (at idle) or see it from time to time to feel right. _________________ Salmon Slayer

Would you believe J. C. Whitney shows two "steering wheel spinners", one of which folds away inward? Could be the ticket. If you don't have the catalog, I've seen them in the supermarket magazine rack for $3.99. |
