I just finished installing my SL windlass. I don't know the answer to your question and you'll probably get the answer here but if not, I found SL tech support very helpful when troubleshooting an installation issue.
Good luck. |

Hey Bobb-
Most all of these windlasses have a clutch that's adjustable linking the motor with the gypsy. This allows for various degrees of drive tension on the gypsy, and when released fully, allows for "free fall" wherein the rode plays out freely, rather than having to run the motor in the "down" direction all the way to pay out the rode and anchor.
I have a different brand than you (Quick Aires), but usually the principles are the same. I have a handle with a 'star' pattern drive that fits in the top of the gypsy that tightens and loosesns the clutch.
This should be explained in your Owner's Manual if you have one. If you don't, you may be able to get one on line to print out. Simpson Lawrence is now known as Simpson Lewmar if I'm not mistaken. Will link you to there site HERE which has all the windlass owners manuals after you cclick on the "Product Literature" option.

Hi Bobb, good to hear from you.
My S/L Horizon windlass came out of the factory carton with the clutch nut loose. Fortunately, I found it when I was running in the rope on the trailer. They gave me a funny looking wrench to fit the nut so I tightened it down and it works fine. I don't know if your Sprint works the same as my Horizon, but I am sure it has the clutch. The clutch won't slip before the motor stalls in service, but it will give way before something else tears the deck off the boat. _________________ TyBoo Mike

Bobb, I have the Sprint 600. TyBoo describes the wrench, just make sure the pawl is in when you tighten it down. You can actually go up on the foredeck and freefall the anchor using the wrench to release the clutch.
