I copied the following from a post on a different thread. It was posted by WhalerGoFar and I thought it deserved coverage on a separate thread.
Quote:
I see a lot of long url's used on this site and it can play havoc with the search engine here. If you take a moment to use one of the many "short url" sites to shorten the long jobby down, you can make your post look and work better. I know it doesn't make a difference to the user as long as it works, but like littering....everyone can pitch in and make life better for their fellow surfers by taking a few moments to improve on our site enviroment.

Here is an Example of the above link using a "tiny url" probram:
http://22Angler.notlong.com

Here is one of many "Tiny URL" sites:
http://notlong.com/

If we use the tools supplied by Bill & Mike on this site, we can shorten the url’s ourselves.

Using Pat’s second most favorite site as an example, the url is
Code:
http://www.fallsbrew.com/index.htm

It will look like this in the post http://www.fallsbrew.com/index.htm and is a clickable link.
To shorten the url, you would type
Code:
[url=http://www.fallsbrew.com/index.htm]BEER[/url]

And it will look like this BEER in the post and is a clickable link. Both will take you to the same place.

As WhalerGoFar stated, it will help maintain the sites appearance and make for better post.

The reason I believe it is better for us to use the tools available on this site is, whenever you use http://notlong.com/ you are directed to notlong.com for the address of the web page you want to visit, then you are redirected to the page you want. When I want to go to Houston from Seattle, I don’t want to go to Chicago to get the Houston address. Regardless how fast I travel, there can be unexpected delays in Chicago. However that may be better than loooooooooooooon url’s

Ya know, I always wondered how those cool "one word" links were inserted, but never got around to asking...I'm not the most computer nerdly guy around...and now I know how. Thanks!

Dave,
Good explanation.
You can also use the buttons above the message box when you are posting.
There, you can make bold, italics, underline print.
You can do quotes, codes or lists. You can link to an image or a url.
It took me a few times to get the hang of it, but, hey it's a lot better then posting a url link that is so long it makes everyone scroll the page to read.

Bill explained how to do the links before, probably more than once, but depending on how computer savy you are at the time (which determines how ready you are to understand the explanation), it will go by some of us until we're able to understand it.

Same thing with the embeding of photos.

What's next of the tricks of the trade?

Joe.
