For the first time in BC Ferry history a ferry has sunk. Apparently about 12:43 AM this morning it struck a reef about 100 K south of Prince Rupert and sank within 1 hour. All 100 passangers and crew were evacuated to life boats and were safely picked up by a Canadian Coast Gaurd vessel. Just goes to show that even the best of navigation gear and in a ship you can have trouble on the Inside Passage.

Yeah, we heard of CBC this morning that there were two meter seas and, I believe, 40 knot winds. Also, some nearby fishing boats aided in the rescue. What a frightening prospect that must've been. It's amazing no one appears to have been lost. _________________ .....and remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. |

well if its six on and six off it would be the mate that parked it shift change is at 12 .... familiarity breeds contempt you end up sleeping on the job ... but 12:43 am. he may still be running on the course the captain set ... if 12:43 was the mayday the crash was earlier ... can't wait for the news .. wc |

caught the news to me it looks like change of watch and no one was minding the ship (shooting the breeze), ... how embarrassing ...
its thirty plus years back but in that area, running lite came across a brown bear swimming to Gil island ... heading south it would have been from left to right can't think of the island to the left .. but it was a surprise just the same like right in the middle of Wright sound I'm sure it was over 5 miles in distance ..
went through with a log tow from Rupert to Ocean Falls same place, and with the binoculars seen what looked like the tentacle or arm of a very large octopus ??? sea monster .. .. their was no way it could have been drift standing on end like hung up with tide and beach.. it popped up a couple of times than disappeared ... would have been 20 feet in length their abouts .. no i still had all my marbles back than |
