Can anyone give me an educated answer as to how much a base 25' C-Dory with a 135 Honda on it would have cost?
It is a 2004 model year.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
This isn't an exact comparison, but I can give you the MSRP for my 2003 25 when it was new. It has a 130 Honda for power. The 135 was a new design in 2004. It has the following factory options:

-Opening center window
-Electric wiper center window
-Wallas stove
-Raw water washdown

Including a King KBT 5400 galvanized trailer the MSRP for the boat, motor & trailer was $65,800.

The price of a CD25 or any boat depends on the options, where in the country the boat was delivered and which dealer. Owner installed equipment vs. dealer installed (some owners do a better job than dealers). When I bought my new boat the price difference was $10,000 between dealers for the same thing and the closer more expensive boat had fewer options (including delivery of 1700 bucks from Fla to NY). Some dealers discount engines and others do not. Its the same with trailers or other line item add ons.It cost me less to have my boat shipped from Florida dealer stock compared to delivery of a new boat ordered custom from the factory from a closer dealer. Remember, value of a used boat is also relatve to its condition, usage, and upgrades since new. New boats in inventory on a dealer's lot cost money daily due to floor plan financing and depending on demand and how long the boat is carried in inventory; some dealers are happy to move it at a lower price to end their accumulating carrying costs.

The cost of the materials used to build new is going up. Aluminum, polyester or vinylester resin, stainless steel, are rising exponentially! This tends to maintain the value of older products made from these materials since new costs more for the same item compared to slightly used. Since the cost of new is greater than a few years ago, and the comodity the product was made with has appreciated, the price of a used boat may not be very different compared to its original purchase price, but can be less compared to today's price for the same thing. This is good news for previous purchasers since the boat holds its value. An owner can pay off his loan and enjoy a relatively low cost of ownership when he sells his boat. This is especialy true for a boat such as a C-Dory that enjoys demand for new product and low real depreciation with moderate maintenance.

If you look at used boats maintained in good condition that were built 10-15 years ago and maintained, they're selling price is very close to their original selling price, plus new engine or minus reduced engine value due to usage depreciation, plus electronics, minus older electronic's reduced value for age and older technology.

So... to answer what a base boat cost is kinda hard since different dealers sold base boat, engine and equipment packages that were 10-15k more or less compared to base boat packages offered by different dealers in 2004 at different times of the boating season, north, south, east, or west. Also, a fully loaded previously owned 2004 boat may cost the same as or even more compared to a brand new 2006 base boat today.

It all depends.

Also, a fully loaded previously owned 2004 boat may cost the same as or even more compared to a brand new 2006 base boat today. [quote]

Pete :
Thanks for your insight and reply. What you have said will make me think more and maybe move away from a boat which has more expensive owner installed options that I don't really want or need at this point. Frankly, I would rather install my own options as the need arises.
Here's my conundrum. I have a 1997 Trophy. I repowered it with a Suzuki 140 in 2004, new motor. I also upgraded the electronics and radio. So, if I can get a new bare hull, put my 140 and current electronics on it, I think I can get into a CD at a more efficient cost and not waste bucks already spent.
I love my 140 and it seems stupid to give it away with a sale of the Trophy, which may not get much more for the combo than the motor is worth, at least to me on, another vessel. I have seen some folks here who have 140 Suzukis on their 25's, and they seem to work well.
What do you think?
Thanks for putting up with me,
Bill

Star - and you are. Nice job on that Trophy. I'll keep my transom cover on forever.....until I get a CD.
A boat's worth is much more to the owner - if they are into it - than to a buyer. I don't want "cheap", I want a boat I can say " This is my last boat"., and mean it!!!!!
Thanks, Bill

I just uploaded some CD price lists from the '95 and '96 Seattle Boat Shows. They are in the Documents forum. My CD 25 Cruise Ship, which I paid $43k for three years ago (with new Honda 130), sold for $32k base price and $43.2k with a 115 HP outboard brand new.

This doesn't help much in this discussion, but it made me remember having the things and they are cool to look at. I just wish I could remember the CB username for the gentleman named Jerry who sent them to me a couple years ago.
