Yes James, I was tongue and cheek much of the time. Truth be told I'm the weak link when it comes to communicating. I'm stubborn, which she has ways of dealing with, and I tend to dominate the driving. At some point, due to the conversations and example I've had on this site it occurred to me that this needs to change. Kim needs to be able to safely operate the boat, duplicating my skills, in case of an injury. Since she has never had a car accident I beleive she will shine once driving the boat for a while. As an arborist (formerly) I really enjoy handling the lines and it should go well. In my attempt at dry PA Dutch humor I was hoping to draw you all out and explain how you divivy up your responsibilities. You see we enjoy boating but it has never been more than a bay crossing or a short river run. She would read or sunbathe and not pay attention to the piloting part. Upon reaching the destination she would drop the hook and I'd back up to adjust the scope. We were never very serious. But I bet these things will go well for us. The Idea of traveling to far destinations is new to us. Having a team of my own peers is awesome. We're reading and taking courses but still no boat. It will all come together and thank you for describing how you and Joan usually divide chores. It is our goal to get to that level. |

I think James summed it up best above! Cockpit resource management in the airlines was all about using all resources to your advantage. That included both your copilot and your airplane and it's equipment. Sometimes your copilot may provide skills above yours, and other times, it may be appropriate to help them gain skills. Or if you piss that other pilot off, they may not be as willing to bail you out except maybe to save their own butt. In our C-Brat community, another terminology is used frequently. The wife is usually the admiral and the husband the captain. You may run the boat, but the admiral outranks you. lol! As with everything, confidence and experience comes with time and practice. I love and prefer to be the one in the driver's seat, and most the time, Rosanne is perfectly comfortable with that. I do try to get her in the helm seat occasionally so she can gain more experience there. And I appreciate her excellent cooking and help with docking, launching, loading, etc. |

Sound like a perfect relationship with your admiral.
I am serious about getting Kim to the level where she can dock or back into slips and that will come in time. She seems interested in electronic navigation but it will take a bit for driving. And we have the time. |

Donald, you say you do not own a boat but did you own a C-Dory at some point? Your photo album seems to show you did. |

I tried to buy one last year. That was the one in my album. I was in discussion with another member regarding it. I showed him photos and never erased them. That one was never purchased. It is now owned by a fellow in Jonesport Me, I can’t figure out how to post but I had posted back then. I hope to figure that out. My last boat was a 238 DLv Carolina Skiff. We used it lightly for fishing on the Delaware, and RARITAN Bay. Before that I had a 25 and a 28’ sailboat that we used on Barnegat Bay and small parts of the Chesapeake.
We were never serious about going anywhere. We just bopped back and forth from beach to beach. Never took it serious. We hope to enjoy trips next year. |
