So, my question here is, what is your favorite mix for shrimp bait?????????
I have a similar recipe that I mix. it consists of
(1) one can of Friskies seafood platter cat food
(2) one can of canned Mackerel or any other oily fish
(3) five cans , using one of the empty cans, of a cheap dry cat food
Mix it all together.this is usualy good for two drops of the pots, rebaiting . I also use the plastic bait jars and have drilled lots of holes in them. we also only let the pots soak for about 45-60 minutes . that usualy gives us ample time for 2 drops on a tide before the current gets to swift.
I like to drop the first time about 20 to 30 minutes before high tide and fish through the slack and the out going tide.
it is all quite a learning curve out there. the first time we dropped our pots we didn't know how bad the currents can get. first pull was OK . then about the time we were ready to pull the 2nd time the current started to pull the bouys under. we watched as our flags slowly went down(like a periscope....lol....). we had to stick arround for about 5 hours waiting for the tide change before the bouys resurfaced. when we retrieved them they were so wrinkled from the pressures they had been under down deep.I have since gone to larger bouys and also use a small anchor to keep the pots stationary.It would realy pay to get a good tide /current chart for the area you wish to set your pots in.

I got this from a study that the UW did many years ago. When you are out fishing save all the guts from cleaning your salmon, blood and all, in a bucket. Bring it home and put it in empty half gallon wax paper milk cartons and freeze it. These frozen blocks fit perfect in the bait holder of my pots, yours may differ. Just peal the paper off the frozen blocks and drop it in the bait holder, they will slowly melt and draw shrimp from all over.

I Roger , I use the tuna Carslisle cat food can, just a few small holes, this is the can that most of us around here use. I buy a large bag of pellets the one they use in farm fish, not the small one but the large one, than I use a 5 gals. bucket fill it with the pellets than had fish oil to it than I leave alone for 1 week or 2 .I also only fill my plastic bait jar with only 1/4 full of feed! I put 2 per pot , this way the pellets will release more food around the pots moving around with the current , I also will use herring, gut fish . My sets are usually 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours.

We use a large size dry dog food, then soak it in Alaska liquid fish fertilizer. It has to be the non-deodorized fish fertilizer. Mix the two with a disposable glove. The large dog food stays in the bait holder well, and the smell draws shrimp better than anything else we have used. Got the formula from a commercial shrimper. It's all he uses.
