I've found a used replacement lower unit I'm considering buying (40hp Honda). The paint is worn off at the tip of the skeg, and underneath is a dark color that looks like primer. The seller says a part of the skeg the size of a silver dollar was chipped of, but welded and repaired.

Any reason to worry about this? Or just touch up the paint and run with it!?

PS - I have had props welded and repaired before, never any issue, so I figure this is the same?

I wouldn't worry about it. Any paint you put on it will wear off quickly.

It is not unusual to weld back chunks of skegs. I would want to be sure that all of the seals are still good. The heat from welding can damage the seals. A good professional will be certain that those seals are OK.

I knocked the lower part of the skeg off on Journey On. That's aluminum. Had it welded by a good welder and never thought about it until today. I guess the seals were good, never leaked.
