I'm thinking about treating my old tub to a professional detailing job. I see a lot of the local auto detailers extoling the virtues of a ceramic finish treatment. ..... has anybody had this done? is it worth it?

Ken, no personal experience, but a good number of folks in the Oliver travel trailer forum have had it done to their fiberglass Ollies. Expensive, but the folks seem to have high praise for the results.

There is a great deal of information in "The Hull Truth". It boils down to who does the job, and what materials are used. Some are just better. Some are scams. To have a top notch job costs about $100 a foot. Some detailers charge close to that for an excellent compound polish and wax. The coating is expensive, but so it the labor to do the prep work. I paid about $75 a foot for a really good detail job on the Caracal.

My Ford Explorer has a good ceramic coating job, and it is now 3 years old, and still looks just like new. I probably will get it done again at some point.

That Si02 pretend ceramic stuff from McKee's worked good on the boat for me. I even used the MeGuiar's brand on the plastic car. It would still bead up after a few months which was way better than any of the conventional marine wax I tried.

Of course that isn't a true ceramic coating like the detail guys will try to convince you theirs is but it is sure easy to spritz on and spray off. Whatever you do don't let them talk you into Cilajet. I spent quite a bit to get that stuff put on the black car and it didn't last long and never did shine like good old fashioned carnauba did.

I think the old tub is just going to get another dose of elbow grease and Collenite fleetwax. I'm going to put that detail money towards a custom built roof rack incorporating a manual crab pot puller davit.
