G'day Ladies and Gents, I am considering buying a 2001 22' Cruiser. It is in quite good shape but I noticed similar hairline cracks where the aft cockpit combing meets the aft cabin bulkhead. They are small (potentially just in the gelcoat) but occur on both sides of the boat. I can send photos if that might help anyone provide consideration.
Anybody want to share their thoughts or concerns?
Thanks, John 6/1/23

Welcome to the site, John.

Likely cosmetic 'stress cracks', use the Search box at the upper left and enter 'stress cracks'.

Bob Austin posted the answers in a 2017 post here.

Cat O' Mine has them, too. They are like 'laugh lines' for the over 60 crowd...you can get them fixed, but it may come out looking worse.

Always get a survey. A good C-Dory may sell very fast, so don't miss out on too many of them.

Good luck in your search!

John

My '08 22 cruiser has them. To me it's "meh."

Very common and not to be worried about. The gel coat is thick here, there is a fairly sharp bend, and the gel coat will have these spider cracks. I have repaired some, but often they will come back.

Agree with others, not unexpected and not a reason to skip. My 2001 doesn’t have these (yet) but my 1981 dory did have these and they eventually (after 30+ years) parted enough to lead to water intrusion to the wood core along the gunnel. I would not hesitate to buy with hairline cracks but keep an eye on them and get them fixed if they start to gap open. Not an expensive or difficult remediation project.
