I’m planning to install permatrim tabs to my twin Honda 40 outboards soon, I’d like to hear how people who have them like them and more to the point, if you installed them did you bolt them on or use a marine adhesive.

Thanks, Tom

If you type "Permatrim" in the search box just above your post, you will find a ton of discussion.

I loved mine. I think most people who install them do also. I would recommend following the manufacturers instructions on installation. I know mine called for bolting on.

One important aspect of using these tabs is that they need to run right at or just barely below the surface of the water when the boat is on plane. I think it is not uncommon for engines to be mounted too low. I would suggest checking out how the Permatrims will sit and adjust the engine mounting if necessary. (My guess is that a lot of engines are mounted too deep regardless of whether they have Permatrims.)

The Permatrims are imported and sold by Shipyard Island Marina on Washington Island, Door County, Wisconsin. The owner, Andy, is a great guy and you can call them directly with any questions you have. He is also good at responding to Email. That being said, I put permatrims on my first CD-22, and then again on my current CD-25, and they work great. Both times I followed the instructions and bolted them on. (Bolts come with the kit.) We ran our CD22 with Honda twin 40’s with trim tabs, but not Permatrims for 9 years, then in 2012 added them & they made a major improvement for our three month SE Alaska cruise that year & all our cruising the next 7 years. In 2019, we repowered to Honda twin 60’s & the Permatrims for them were much larger, than for the twin forty’s, as they will fit Honda outboards from 60 to 150 hp. There can be a lot of pressure on the Permatrims. On the twin 40’s, I used bolts & 5200. When, I had to replace the lower unit casing on one of the 40’s, I sure regretted using the 5200, so with the 60’s considered bolts & 4200 & ended up with just the bolts. They have held up well, the past 4 years. As Bill said, it’s very important to where they ride in relationship to the water surface & also their exact alignment, when mounting using the bolts.

For how we use our CD22, the combination of trim tabs & Permatrims has been a major improvement for boat handling & comfort over just the trim tabs.

Jay

One of the first things I did to our CD-25 with a Yamaha 115 was to add a Permatrim.

Very worthwhile upgrade!

Agree 100% with Colby. Andy is friendly and extremely helpful - even patient and kind to the ignorant beginning boater I was when I called him.

In comparison the Permatrims are far better than other foils. Definitely bolt.
