I live in the Pacific Northwest and am preparing to make the great loop.
several folks have told me I should get an auto pilot.
Does anyone have one for sale? _________________ Keith Foote

Have recently replaced the entire electronics on my C-Dory with a new Raymarine Axiom System including the Auto Pilot. I do have a Raymarine System with C-80 Chart Plotter, Radar, Sonar and Auto Pilot electronics for sale. The Auto Pilot Hydraulic pump is not for sale, just the electronics. Let me know if you or anyone else is interested in any or all of this equipment. _________________ Peter & Judy Haase

Hi Peter,
I have been thinking about your offer.
I am going to pass.
I think I want to purchase the complete set up for a guidance system. |

I really liked the Garmin AP we had on our R23 along with the Garmin MFD. Solid and smooth! _________________ Peter & Caryn

You get what you pay for comes to mind. I started with a Raymarine cheap unit, and it didn't work so hot in any kind of seastate other than calm. I now own a Garmin Reactor 40 with smart pump. It works quite well! My A/P compass is mounted under the dash, above the V-Berth entrance. As long as I don't put anything remotely magnetic above it, I'm good. Colby |

I mounted mine under the v-berth forward of where the porta-potty can be store, It has been working good for me. I do store a bunch of stuff inside and on top of the v-berth while traveling, I just need to be careful about where I place things that can mess with the compass. _________________ Stephan

Garmin Reactor 40 is the way to go. Fairly easy to install IF you have hydraulic stearing. Both Colby and I installed our own. Works great at slow speeds and traveling fast. I just finished the Loop on our friends 45’ cruiser and the auto pilot is definitely a must as far as I’m concerned. I did visit with a couple CD-22 owners that were doing the loop and the boats have some advantages over the bigger boats. We had 4 on board so a C-Dory was not an option. Have fun on your Loop.
A normal year has us putting hundreds of hours and over 6 months on our 25. A good part of it fishing on Lake Superior. With the AP my wife can come back to help with netting fish when trolling at slow speed. Without the AP the boat starts turning. I use the AP for steering most of the time unless in tight congested areas. _________________ Tom and Joyce Schulke

The current question is where to put the auto pilot compass or chip set which gives compass direction.
The answer should be that this should be fairly low in the boat, and away from any major magnet influences. as close as possible to the center line. For example if you put it under the helm seat, don't store a cast iron pot next to it, or even any ferrous metal objects.
The only pilot I had on C Dorys was an older RayMarine and it was fine for cruising from 7 to 25 knots of boat speed. _________________ Bob Austin

Thanks for the clarification Bob. Bob is right, care should be taken to not have any Ferrous metals (metal that contains iron) near the core sensor. In the cabinet under the helm seat, we tend to only store fenders and soft shoes etc.. The install is fairly low and centered in that space. Gary |

Ours is mounted under the rear passenger seat just above the water tank. We use that area to store towels clothes and paper goods. This has worked well for us. _________________ Doug & Susan |
