Jody, I don’t have one yet, but it’s the choice of one of my sons for his jeep & off road trailer, where his cargo space is very limited. There are several YouTube videos showing its effectiveness.

I think I remember you already having one on the boat.

Seems counterintuitive to set off a pyrotechnic device when things are already on fire.

How well does it work in a breeze (i.e. could you use it to fight a fire on your outboard engine)?

What do you do with it when the fire is out but the extinguisher is still burning?

It doesn't seem to shoot very far. How close to the fire do you need to be for this to work?

As with most safety items there are many views and things to consider. The Element looks good for longevity and easy to store, but you might not want to get rid of the traditional fire extinguishers.

Pros and cons to everything. I like that it doesn't expire and there is no maintenance. Size and weight is also nice and it doesn't leave a mess. For right now it doesn't have Coast Guard approval so you would still have to carry one that does. They come in 30, 50 and 100 second sizes. The gas hangs around and stops flareups. If you were using in the wind any fire extinguisher going to have some issues. Here another video were they us it to put out a fire.

Jay I have a 100 second one on order for over landing, I don't have one in the boat yet.

Here is content information on what appears to be identical but for sale in the UK and imported from Argentina.

There are some health risks with the Potassium Nitrate type of fire extinguishers, especially in close spaces.

Another type of extinguisher I keep in my vehicles, kitchen, and galley in the boat are the "First Alert (Kiddie) EZ Fire Spray . This is low to no residue, and gives 32 seconds of spray. I keep the dry powder and a CO2 extinguishers in my vehicles as well. Consider that even though you may not have a fire in your vehicle or boat--but that you may arrive on a scene where there is a fire on another boat or vehicle. I have used my fire extinguishers to suppress fire to help people out of both their vehicles and out of boats.

We often don't think of the fire risk in our boats. But if you follow the boat accident literature, there are significant fires even in long distance cruising sail boats to make you be very aware. In the larger boats we have used automatic fire suppression systems in the engine room and any other machinery space.

Element's solid construction, no moving parts, and lack of compressed gas (unlike a traditional fire extinguisher) means it will never need any service or upkeep. In addition the solid chemical that makes up the Element extinguisher has no effective expiration.

* IS ELEMENT AFFECTED BY EXTREME WEATHER & CAN IT GET WET? CAN I STORE IT IN MY CAR?

Element has been tested to work effectively in temperatures from -140F to +320F. Moreover Element's solid construction and no moving parts makes it unaffected by harsh environments or humidity. Element can safely be stored in damp and wet environments, provided that the yellow cap covering the tip stays present allowing the tip to remain dry. Element can safely be stored in vehicles that live in hot climates.
 
* WHERE IS ELEMENT MADE?

Element is designed and manufactured in Italy. 

* IS ELEMENT CERTIFIED?

Originating in Italy, Element has been certified by CE Europe, TUV, and the RINA maritime authority. Institutionally it has been tested and certified for use by multiple international military and police groups who have adopted it for active use.

* IS THE GAS SAFE TO BREATHE?

Element's discharge is safe to breathe and is both non-corrosive and non-toxic. General safe practices are always recommended and the discharge should not be aimed at a person's face.

* DOES ELEMENT MAKE A MESS LIKE A TRADITIONAL EXTINGUISHER?

Element's discharge gas is totally clean and will not leave any residue. During discharge a chemical reaction does take place which occasionally expels a trace amount of soot from the casing. Even in the most extreme instance, the net total of discharge is so minuscule compared to a traditional extinguisher that it is effectively considered to be non-existent. Beyond the clean nature of the discharge Elements non-corrosive, non-toxic, and environmentally safe.
