I purchased a 22 cruiser a few months ago. The main engine is a Suzuki 90. The kicker is a Honda 15 on a Garelick up/down motor mount. Unfortunately, the kicker drags in the water even if the mount is raised and the engine tilted up. After talking with Garelick today, I realized the Honda probably has a long shaft. I also realized that the mount should be vertical and it's not. The rep from Garelick suggested installing a shim between the transom and the mount. Then he went on to say that they don't recommend having the motor on the mount when the boat is going down the road on the trailer.

So now what do I do? I've installed motor mounts on sailboats but never on a boat like this.

What's the best practice? Get a smaller kicker?! I have photos of this situation but I don't think I can post them here.

On my boat I got rid of the garelick and replaced it with a mini jack plate. The motor only drags when I first am getting on plane. I have a Honda 9.9 long shaft

We used a short-shaft 3.5hp motor on an adjustable Garelick mount on our 25. It did not drag when underway and the short-shaft was better on the dinghy. The 3.5 was light enough to not be a beast to swap between the boat and the dinghy. I did carry the 3.5 in the bed of the truck (locked bed cover) while towing.

Sorry to be such a blockhead but what's a mini jack plate? Any particular brand?

Thanks!

Do you have a photo of the installation?

You can look in Midnight Flyer's album, in the nested album for kicker install. I used the mini Jack plate for the Tohatsu 6 on my 22. Colby

Thanks all for your suggestions. The old Garelick adjustable motor mount is gone! Holes plugged. Installed a Jack plate. We had lots of discussion about the placement but in the end, it can only go in one spot due to the constraints imposed by the trim tab actuators and the transom. More holes in the transom with plenty of 5200!

Once we had that in place we had another discussion about the exact position of the engine. Up, down, left right. Actually we mounted it then remounted it for better clearance on the Stbd. side of the transom cutout. I'm happy to report that the lower unit now comes completely clear of the water, drags just a bit when we're at speed but not enough to make any difference.

The engine hangs vertical now and clears the trim tabs by a couple of inches.

This engine is a 15 hp Honda with 20" shaft.

I have photos of the before and after. I just can't figure out how to add them to this post.

Would be great to see photos of your progress.
Request a photo album from Tyboo or Danag.
