Hello, I am new here and I currently am in the process of purchasing a 22 foot C-Dory Cruiser. So, I have been shopping for insurance. I called the United Marine Underwriters and the nice lady told me that they do not insure boat owners that don't have a home port and a specified area that they boat in. I live in Colorado, but I do not plan to bring a boat here. I would be using the boat primarily in Florida and the intercostal water ways - or at least that is my goal. Thanks in advance for any help.
Bill

I use Progressive. I don’t recall having that sort of discussion with them. But you will be keeping the boat somewhere. I’d give them that location as the home port. Otherwise tell them Florida.

Florida can be an issue, because of the hurricanes (IE Ian), where maybe thousands of boats are damaged. You have to have a "hurricane plan"--ours is to transport the boat inland in case of a named storm.

How is the boat going to be stored in Florida? Our policy allowed all waters of the US and Canada, within 50 miles of shore. We use a large insurance brokerage which specializes in boats.

Thank you for your responses! I am now talking with the insurance carrier for my home and autos and they do not seem as concerned as United Marine Underwriters.
