I was told by a C-Dory dealer that hull construction, possibly materials used, were changed after a certain year. Can anyone weigh in on this?

You can call the manufacturer in Tacoma; they are very friendly and helpful. They told me that the newer C-Dories have a foam core in the transom vs. the balsa core formerly used. I'm not sure when that changed or what else is different.

Prior to 1987, the C Dory 22 had a "flat bottom" of plywood. After that the hull has remained the same. There are some other differences in the pre 1987 boats. There have been multiple minor changes in the interior, and of the cockpit flooring. But the basic boat has remained the same.

I have a 2005 C-dory 25 and it has a foam transom. Look in my pics and you can see the layup. Structural foam in the transom, balsa in the hull.

Interesting. Got that info from a dealer. Wonder why the discrepancy. Could he have gotten the switch over date wrong? 2004 instead of 2008 maybe?

If you buy the current 23 Venture or 26 Venture C-Dory, the construction is made with 100% high density foam fill with no balsa. Balsa is not a bad material because it does offer superior shear strength value.

That's interesting, my 2006 22' cruiser has a balsa transom. Could it be a mid year transition.

No C-Dory hull material photos from my 26 Venture, sorry.

If it tweeks your fancy, regard photos of a well built vacuum
bagged FG/foam cored sailing vessel hull and deck vs a
multi-layered FG/balsa/marine plywood transom of a high
performance deep V powerboat here:

Seems I recall a post a few years back that tracked the ownership of the hulls from boats and never a perfect boat built. Had to giggle as Im sitting here thinking of our BIG TRANSITION... from C-Dogs to C-Brats.
Prior C-Dog administrator would "filter/change/edit" post that were from "we the people who own them"... posting all the good, the bad, the ugly of our vessels... to what he felt was appropriate for the site.... taking away the many fixes and changes recommended by the end users.
Thanks to all that set up the BIG TRANSITION.. to be able to just lay it all out there and have hundreds of diverse minds/occupation's/water life experiences and skill sets for us and the manufacturers to improve our boats....either as they were made or in our garages, driveways and shops.
Cheers to a great fun of boats for decades and the folks that keep em coming off the lines new.
Love Beer Beer
