Be sure and get the premium vinyl. There are several grades. The best will last years as is Boris's experience.
I also use a heat gun and plastic scraper, go slowly. Zep citrus cleaner will also help, Mary Kat On and Off, 3M decal remover etc. Lots of products. You can take the glue off with "Goof Off".
After removing the old letters, you will find that there is a ghost of the old name, where the gel coat was protected from elements. Hit it with a good rubbing and then polishing compound. I wax before applying the new decal. The ghost lettering will fade with time. _________________ Bob Austin

Just called DIY Lettering to see if they would send me a tiny color sample of the red, dk red, and burgundy. NOPE, no can do. Wondering if anybody has tried it to match the C-Dory Cabernet color, and especially if you have tried the reflective version. I might consider redoing SleepyC with reflective if the color is close.

Warm welcome, StellaBlue!
Unlike most, ours has always been a Southern boat, stored outside in the UV by prior owner, and with a LOT of what Thataway refers to as 'ghosting' of the prior name from no UV damage under the old decal but lots surrounding it.
When we decided to replace the old lettering, we first removed the old vinyl and chose a new 'fatter' premium and reflective font from BoatUS (discount for members). We have been very pleased.
We know you're anxious, but you might consider waiting until you see what's there and what would cover it up better.
Agree choose THE BEST QUALITY THE FIRST TIME.
Best,

I got my name vinyl in a couple of weeks ago and just haven't had a chance to put them on yet. Hopefully it will cool off for a few days and I'll get out there and get it done. 111 degrees is not ideal.
The cactus is 7.5 inches tall.

I applied my new stickers today... got them from BoatUS... got the "reflective" option. The vinyl is 3m brand and I didn't have any problems at all getting them on; very happy. I'm also happy that their "Navy" color matches the Blue on the boat quite well, and the grey shadow matches the non-skid quite well. I suddenly feel all color-coordinated!
Here are some pics, including what it looks like "reflecting" at night.

Nice. I like that. You said you got them from Boat US? If you don't mind can you put a link on where you ordered them? Thanks. Colby |

Never mind, I found it. I'm a BoatUS member, so I just linked to the lettering from their main page. A little more pricey than the www.doityourselflettering.com, but I like the idea of having a reflective number and boat name. Colby |

Keep an eye open for discounts - you get 10% off automatically as a member, but I took advantage of a sale they had going on and got 20% off. Also, they sent me and extra number in case I screwed one up... and I remember some mention about some sort of "oops" protection on any other stickers you get as well. Not sure if they send a free one or if it's a discount or what... that paperwork is already in the trash can
This is my first time with boat lettering, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but very pleased that it went do smoothly. I just took my time and followed the instructions! |

I'm working on some custom artwork for my new-to-me C-Dory. I'm calling her Tremolo, the haunting call of my favorite bird, the common loon. Loons love the water. So do I.
As I work through the design process, I use Adobe Illustrator (a vector-based drawing program) to choose the font and create the logo.
I use Adobe Photoshop to place it on the boat digitally, to get a sense of how it's going to look in real life. When I'm satisfied, it's off to the vinyl store.
I may make some additional tweaks but it's getting close.

I might suggest that if you use that size lettering (and I like that size -- big enough to see from 1000 yards plus), I would move the vinyl up as high on that section as possible because IF/WHEN you are walking the deck form the cockpit to the foredeck, you will (probably) be rubbing toes on the vinyl.
Sure wish I had done reflective lettering when I did mine. Don't think it was available. Mine has been on for 16 years.

I want to give an update on my experiences with https://doityourselflettering.com
I ordered 'Finale' decals originally in 2017. They were excellent and I was very pleased with the product and service.
Fast forward to now and the decals were damaged by a sloppy detailer. I want to remove them and replace directly over the place so there will be no ghosting of the name.
I called them just now and they have my original order record. So exact same ones will be sent to me shortly.
I'm a happy C-Brat now.
BTW I will install after a very good detailer brings her back to almost new outside. _________________ '13 25' Cruiser "Finale"
