I'm curious why some want to raise the bottom paint line several inches. Why?

Depending on the load on the boat, the actual waterline can be a number of inches higher than the colored part of the lower hull (boot stripe) particularly at the stern. Raising the paint line protects the parts of the hull that are in the water. The factory should raise the color line of the lower hull a bit in the build process.

Totally agree that the factory should raise their bottom color pan. Their lines are based on an empty boat, without an engine. I raised mine to the bottom of the next strake line. Also raised the bow to follow that strake line forward to just below the tow loop. That was to keep from growing a seasonal moustache from slow cruising, especially in tannic water.

This is the old line level

I ended up raising the waterline 4 inches and that should be pretty close to right for what I carry. My guess is the boats with the glass interior and the glassed in rear deck weigh at less 400 lbs heavier than the factories bad missed published weight. I sure wish they would weigh one of the new hulls and correct that. At Yellowstone Jay and I were comparing how his boat sits in the water as to mine and mine sits a lot deeper than his.

I put the second coat of epoxy on and here is some info that might be useful.

Two coats and I have reached 10 mils of thickness. The can says you want to be 12 mils thick for the barrier coat to do its job.

It takes 2 quarts to do the bottom of the boat so a gallon will do two coats.

I am going to put the third coat on today and will see where that puts me. I was planing on at least 4 coats.

Oh and did I say I hate painting !!!!

Wow! You really saved a lot of money doing it yourself, even if it was a pain. I redid the bottom paint on the 25 we used to have. Wasn't as mechanically inclined as you so I took her to the local marina yard and paid to have her put up on blocks, but I cleaned and repainted. It lasted a good long while.
It was a pain for me, too, but a money saver, for sure!

Ok the bottom paint is on and the only thing left to do is move the stands and do the whole process again on the 3 8X8 spots.

It will be a good project for you after you get that new shop built.

Yeah, you don't know how bad I'd like to have a nice warm shop big enough for the boat! Crying or Very sad Maybe once the wife retires and we move somewhere that doesn't hurt our face to go outside! (-14 forecast for tonight...) But I keep dreaming! Cool Colby

All of the bottom paint is finished. Started making the new wheels to put the trailer under the boat again. It took about a half a day to get trailer out from under the boat with flat tires ( they don't roll very well when all 4 are flat) had to winch it out from under the boat. New wheels are 1/2" baltic birch plywood.
