Just picked up a 2001 grey 22' Cruiser and starting to get my project list together before spring. Boat came with bottom paint on it but most of it is missing. Not sure if the grey paint below the bottom paint is factory paint or if the boat was barrier coated. Trying to figure out if I need to strip it down and start with a new foundation or if majority of C-Dory's came with white below the waterline so if there is paint it's likely primer/barrier coat. Excited for the boat and to be a member of the C-Brats community! |

The bottom is usually the color of the stripe. _________________ Jody Kidd

The bottoms were always the color of the shear strip and cabin brow stripe
BUT
Since NMI started "adjusting" colors that is not always the case. So if it is an older C-Dory, and yours is in the "older" category here, your boat had a bottom the same color as those stripes. Bottom paint, should have a barrier coat, and that might be gray so, if your stripes are not gray, but that bottom color is, it is most likely a barrier coat or could be bottom paint.
So easier to help if we now what color your stripes are.
And pictures make it even easier.

Thanks for the help everyone, just got an album setup and added a photo for reference, not sure how to embed an image quite yet. With that being said my stripes are grey so I’m assuming what I’m looking at is the factory paint and the bottom wasn’t prepped correctly (hence the bottom paint not sticking well. |

Here is you photo ( to make it easier for others to comment too.
Lots of colors going on there. Looks like the gray is the factory (NOT paint but gel coat), covered by some black (bottom) paint. You are right, it did not stick well, but then we don't know how long ago it was put on so . . . . . .
And that orangish - browninsh - other color. Looks like tannin stain.
Barrier coat is due first, after a couple other steps too, media blast, and dewaxing.
All the best.
