Just bought a ‘98 cd22. For some reason it came with a “new” stainless steel steering wheel.. Seems like most of the boats I’ve seen have black wheels.
Is the black wheel a “dory” thing.? If so, I want one.

My '08 22 came with a stainless steel helm wheel. Previous boat I had (not a C-Dory) came with a black plasticy wheel and I replaced it with a stainless steel destroyer type wheel.

Copied over from a duplicate thread.

I'm not sure it is a "C-Dory thing", but for me, it is more comfortable as it provides a bit better grip, and isn't cold to the touch. Bigger ships, and lots of bigger yachts have stainless steel wheels. Many, too, have wooden ones.

Some things are "C-Dory", the colored shear strip and cabin top trim, the Vests with the C-Dory patch, the crazy wave -- lights blink and horn blows -- when you see one coming down the road, or understanding what CBGT means. Often times, there is a "C" significant in the boat name. I think your wheel should be what ever you like that turns your boat. Wink

You can get a destroyer style helm wheel with a rubberized coating on the rim.

I have one similar to this:

That one looks just like mine too, EXCEPT I have an arbutus wood hub.

You also might consider replacing the steering wheel's hub with one of the gorgeous, hand-made beauties that C-Brat David McKibben makes in his wood shop (assuming he still offers those). Here's a link to see his handy work:
