Looking at the St Croix 488 rotating davit for mounting one on the gunnel for lifting a dingy onto the roof. I’ve found a set of 2 for sale and would use 1.

What does everyone think? Would it work?

Those look like there made for the stern. Doesn't look like they would rotate far enough to put the dingy on the roof.

If you type "garhauer" in the search box at the top of the page, you will find loads of information in various threads.

Bob,

What did you come up with regarding optimum height for your davit? I’m trying to put 2 Hobie revo 13’s on the roof of my 26’ venture and then a 9’ dinghy on top of those.

I used to own a 13 Revolution, and my current inflatable is a 9.5' air floor with 15" tubes. On our C Dory 25, we added 12" to the base tube. That was enough to get the boat just to the cabin top level--and then slide it up onto the top, with minimal weight on the cabin. I had been thinking about putting the spreader bar lower, and at the point of balance. (it is about 3" off, utilizing the D rings which were already in the boat.

Also we don't know if you are going to use a rack, or just some padding under the kayak directly on the roof structure.

I advise adding 24" for most boats. The problem is I don't know how "tall" Garhauer will make the lower support tube. I also don't know what point you will use to attach the Rev. to the spreader bar.

If Garhauer will allow 30", that is where I would be just eyeballing what is necessary.

Let us know how it works out.

Thank you Bob! I think I’ll give them a ring next week and see what they will do.

It is kind of a kludge IMO. You could do something similar on a C-Dory if you really wanted to.

I had looked at that system, and my conclusion was that you needed two rather long swim steps, which went beyond the outboard. Would that be practical for the C Dory line? Also there is already a swim step/outboard bracket involved for the outboard. The mechanism is a but crude with the winch which has to be put on the gunnel etc. There would be easier and smoother ways to do that part of it using a small electric winch.

I had a system which pulled a 12 1/2' RIB with 25 hp (Weight in the 370# category) over the transom of my Cal 46, like a "pull boat" on a purse seiner, with an electric winch--smooth and about a minute to either retrieve or launch even when under way. That type of system might be developed as part of a frame, rack over the cockpit of the C Dory 22 or 25, instead of a Bimini. I know of some 22s which carry the dinghy on a rack over the cockpit--but I don't believe any of them are motorized.
