Hi, so I am always pushing this book as the best tool for under standing tides and currents in this area. I just found out that some one has put it all in to a app. Its a hard book to use some times and have the yearly updated tables. it can get confusing picking the right time and date and page if your finger slips. Well now its all on a easy to use app. I have been emailing the developer back and forth the last few days on an issue with the app but it looks more like a setting issue on my phone, which he will address in future updates. but I thought I would share the links to the app. Yes its a one time few of $19 but with the work put in this its well worth it.

For the years I drove commercial whale watch boats in the San Juans, that book was essential. Knowing what to expect by putting the wind and weather forecasts with the information in this book to determine the best routing and timing.

I like the idea of having the information on an app. Thanks for sharing that, Tom.

Thumbs Up

Tom, that is an excellent tool. Several years ago I found something very similar for the whole SE Alaska area on the Internet. It was early winter & thinking I would remember & not need it for some time, I didn’t mark the site or perhaps app & now I’ve searched & searched & can’t find it again. In large channels like Chatham Strait & Stevens Passage it would show the back currents & strength of current in different places across the channels. Not only would it work for helping with estimated conditions in conjunction with wind, but also for increasing milage by knowing where to place the boat in a wide channel to get either the maximum benefit or least hindrance from the changing current at given times.

The Navionics & other charts will give very helpful information on direction location & times of currents, but no where near as defined as the one I can’t find again now.

If anyone knows where it is to be found. Please let me know.

Jay

Thanks the paper version is a bit of a pain so looking forward to trying the digital version. Essential for fishing for halibut around Victoria!

I have used the paper version of that book and the annual updates since 2006. WOW, I have paid for that app several times over. It is essential if you are a sailor, a slow boat cruiser, or fishing and want to see the backeddies and slack areas.

Thanks Tom. Good find.
