Getting the parts together for my next upgrade to Shearwater... The captain cam. Bought a color 12V waterproof backup RV camera that I will interface with the laptop through a USB video input device. My navigation software supports a video window so the main use will be as a rearview mirror (The original 25's don't have very good visibility out the back). be able to capture to hard disk also so I can record while fishing or cruising.
Looks like the total cost we be around $200 Will update as it comes along.

That sounds like a pretty darn cool project...you could keep an eye on the rods while trolling..and get some great home movies while you're at it. You could start your own show on The Outdoor Channel..."Welcome to 'C-Dory's Shearwater Adventures' We have a great show for you today..."
Oh, come on, it made you smile, didn't it?

Yes it did make me smile Rick.
Got all the parts together. The camera looks to be very high quality as far as the enclosure goes all stainless screws and very heavy duty. The unit is only about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide and deep.
Picked up a video to USB adaptor made by Hauppauge, needed a couple of adaptor cables and about 6 hours of mucking around but I now have a working video feed into the laptop. My navigation software even works with it!!!
Thinking I will mount it on the roof with a RAM mount. Be so nice to see out the back of the boat with a picture instead of the radar.
Will post some pictures once I get it installed.

Handy little gadget , on my 10'' gps chart plotter the camera can be use, so you can see everything in front of the boat, while steering my boat in the cockpit you can see the 10 '' srceen very clearly through the back window at least on a 22' boat . It is perfect when trolling with lots of boats around. Using velcro it can be use for the front or at the back. |

I saw the same type of camera at the auto parts store the other day. the camera is water proof and all ready inclosed. Just have to mount it to the back bulk head or radar arch and Iam in business. They cost $95 at chucks auto and I can pic up a record to disc camera at the swap shop cheap. My father just put a camera in the tail of his plan so when hes flying with his club he can tape everything. Now to figure a rod holder pressure relay to start the recorder when the rod is hit by a big one. _________________ Thomas J Elliott
