OK Folks - we've now got an event calendar. Here's how it works.

You can view it in one of two ways:

- In the main menu at the top of each page, you'll see the Calendar link. Click on this to get the full month view. Don't expect much yet, we don't have many official get-togethers lined up.

- In the upper right corner is another Calendar link; this one has a small arrow next to it. If you click on this one, you get a 7 day window view. Again, not much there yet.

The calendar entries are tied to forum topics - any topic can easily be turned into a calendar entry. When you see an entry on the calendar, just click on it, and it will take you right to the discussion. To keep some semblance of order around here, only Mike (TyBoo) and I can turn a topic into a calendar entry. If we see a date materialize in a discussion, we'll flag it to become an entry on the calendar.

As always, feel free to share your opinions...

And for a simple list of dates and places, I will still try to keep the top message in the thread I started up to date.

I've started renaming the cruise topics by date first, then location. Why? If you look on the home page, any confirmed cruise will show up in the "Upcoming Events" section, sorted by date.

Thanks Pat - I'll keep an eye on this thread and as things get confirmed, make the necessary changes so the front page stays up to date as well.

Is it too early to put up the Newport, South Beach Marina Halibut cruise?

Anybody interested in going should know that there are no reservations available and that the slips are first come first served.
I plan to show up at least one day early so I can try to get a few fresh Herring for bait anyway. The scene at the ramp the morning of the opener is nothing short of pure chaos.

This is not really a beginner trip for Halibut fishermen as early season weather can be unpredictable and history teaches us that only about half the open days are actually ventured as the weather just plain keeps us from it. But the days that come together are nothing short of fantastic and I wouldn't miss the Halibut opener for anything.

I would volunteer to be the point of contact.

There are plenty of opportunity for those who do not want to make the long trip to the Halibut beds. Herring in the bay, Crab, Salmon and bottom fish are all great targets. There is a fantastic Aquarium, Wax Museum, Historic Old Bay district and the Lincoln city casino is practically up the street.

I am forecasting the dates to be May 13, 14 and 15 and 20, 21 and 22. These dates are not confirmed but I expect that they will be as the opener has been the second and third week in May for at least the last 4 years.
