Scuttlebutt the sailing rag reported the races thusly:
Quote: | New Zealand wins America’s Cup warm-up
As Emirates Team New Zealand dominated and won the event, what was discovered during the PRADA America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) Auckland was that these flying machines are capable of match-racing, giving promise for the Prada Cup challenger series in January and February and the America’s Cup match in March 2021.
ACWS Race Day 1
The first racing day of the ACWS concluded with New York Yacht Club American Magic (USA) leading the ranking after winning both their matches. A total of four matches were held for the four teams in a south-westerly breeze ranged between 15 and 19 knots, with the top speed of the day at 49.1 knots reached by New Zealand. - Full report
ACWS Race Day 2
Four match races were held on the second day of the ACWS on race course C, the preferred playing field as it brings the racing right into the heart of the Waitematā Harbour, with shifty and puffy Northwest breezes between 10 to 14 knots. After day 2, the ranking list saw New York Yacht Club American Magic and Emirates Team New Zealand on a tie with three wins each. The Challenger of Record Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (2 points) and INEOS TEAM UK (0 points) followed in third and fourth position respectively. - Full report
ACWS Race Day 3
The final race was the one that mattered when it came to who would take the ACWS trophy. With Emirates Team New Zealand and American Magic on even points, a win against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli would give the Kiwis the point that they needed to take the trophy. Emirates Team New Zealand won the last race by 0:16 seconds over Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. - Full report |
Note the top speed of 49.1 knots!
It was really not a "blow out" for New Zealand. NZ won the last race by 16 seconds.Until there US and New Zealand were tied, and Italy was close. As I read thru the reports the biggest looser was the British. There was some issue about updated software for the foils controller. All of the boats are using the same mechanism to move the foils, and the Brits claimed they had not received the updated software. _________________ Bob Austin
