You will absolutely hear it. And feel it too. I thought a lot of the tomcats had built in gensets. Am I confused?

To my knowledge only one Tom Cat has a built in 110 V AC generator. One has or had a gasoline operated dive compressor. Both of these had been modified to fit the engine/compressor in place where the seat or bait tank is. Neither were placed in the hulls. There are issues from exhaust to safety with now a gasoline powered generator which might ventilate to the bilge, and significant addition of weight to the stern of the boat. I sea trailed the one with the dive compressor, and it made a significant difference in handling in my opinion...Enough that when I added extra batteries to the boat, I put them amidships.

Thanks Bob - there was a nice one for sale in Coos Bay last spring that had one and I suppose that is the one you were thinking of. I just thought since it had one, lots of tomcats did. I guess not. In lots of ways I would rather not have a built in genset for the reasons you noted. The little Honda and Yamaha are nice little units and very compact. I don't think they are that expensive all things considered.

Send your email to rstinger@cox.net.
Would love to chat about your new ride.
I am in Wanchese, NC. Not many Tomcats on the Least Coast.
Bought my 2008 about a year ago. My shakedown was a 10 day Carolina Loop last month. Dismal Swamp Canal, VA Cut, Great Bridge locks, Alligator River, Pamlico Sound, Ocracoke, etc etc.
Was a crash course, but it worked out well. Bob

There will be others that argue that the Chinese generators are “just fine”. My suggestion to you is measure the voltage fluctuation on whichever generator you intend to purchase. When I looked at the cheap Asian 2000w generators I saw a voltage fluctuation range of 70v to 130v (same generator while running). The Honda gave me a steady 122v. Those fluctuations wreak havoc on anything electronic and will end up costing you way more than the cost of the generator when you replace all that stuff. In the end the Honda will cost me far fewer dollars over the life of the generator so it was a no brainer purchase for me. I went 2000w but must admit that the 1000’s physical size is sure appealing.

It is easy to write off inexpensive Chinese generators as all inferior crap, and that is probably correct with the Harbor Freight generators. But WEN is an American company with offices and warehouses in Elgin, IL, that has made and sole a wide range of tools since 1951. Yes, the WEN generator is assembled in China but this generator is seriously in the same league as Honda and Yamaha at half the price. It has basically the same engine as the Yamaha.

Read about the company here. Read a thorough review of the generator here.

So write it off you want to, but I think it is a great generator at a tremenous price compared Honda and Yamaha,
