"American Exceptionalism". The phrase itself conjures up an image of the USA somehow being the number one nation on the planet

Yes it does and yes it should.

Now if the self loathing is over lets get back to boats.

I watched a great show on these boats that described many of the aspects of this amazing tech. I was not aware that the main sail is attached right to the deck to keep the wind from rolling under the sail and slowing the boat down. Some of the boat also have a longer keel that rides closer to the water in a effort to keep the wind from flowing under the keel . The whole boat , from top of sail to bottom of hull, is a foil that comtruibets to moving the boat. Even the shape of the deck acts a a lift wing. I also noticed how the hulls shape resembles a whales profile. Cool stuff.

Tom, note I was not the one who picked this thread's title.

Quote:
American exceptionalism is a European-born critique of the United States of America that the country sees its history as inherently different from that of other nations, stemming from its emergence from the American Revolution, becoming what the political scientist Seymour Martin Lipset called "the first new nation" ...
.

Much of this has roots in the 3 volumes written by Alexis de Tocqueville from his observations traveling in America Circa: 1831.

Exceptional has several meanings.

The definition depends on the way that "Exceptionalism" is used. In the case of the original post, I don't think that the uniqueness of America applies.
Exceptionalism has the meaning of unique as well as exceptional, special at any one point of time. I wonder what would have happened if the Unites States Australia, New Zealand and Canada had not entered WW II? Certainly World history would have been different.

None of this has anything to do with C Dorys, since I feel that the French and New Zealanders have the most passion for boating in the World. But American has been on the cutting edge of evolutionary boat development and perhaps that is what Barry meant. (French, Aussies, and Kiwis have certainly held their own in development)

(Bob) Thanks for your assessment of the Title I chose to use for this article. It is exactly as you have assumed it to be, without a hint of any Political Statement in mind!

I believe what makes the USA great is her founding documents. They set forth that every person has the God given right to personal property and the freedom of choice and thought as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. Our Bill of Rights were selected and ratified by the states to say that these rights are not given to the people by the government but by God and could not be taken away from the people by the government because they were never the governments rights to give. If that does not make us exceptional I don’t know what does. Because of my right to choose my destiny I have chosen to own a C dory 25. Ain’t America Great!

Part of the problem is that people have different gods who say different things. Which God is referenced in the Bill of Rights? I don't think it is specified. What about people who are not subscribers to that particular God?

I have pretty much lost touch with this race a cycle after the girls team lost the trials in Koch’s boat that Melgas as helmsman had won for him the CUP the previous race. Saw the girls team up close as they prepared for one of the run off races and on the course of San Diego. The grinders had never sailed before and were recruited from weight lifting gyms. It still was exciting following the teams around the course. Up close and personal.

I learned to sail on a Snipe Class sloop boat made of wood with canvas deck and cotton sails. Yes the class still exists according to the internet. Boat was designed in 1930’s. I learned at age 13 in 1956.

Stopped sailing in 1990’s. Stuck with Pygmy row boat until we build a Redwing 21’ then bought a Venture 23’ which will end our boating career
Spring 2021.

Well long background to say I am totally out of touch with the new spaceship
Boats that are America’s Cup of today. I resist the technology and prefer tradition where water was more apart of the total experience not just seen as
A medium to slice through. I guess each period dislikes the change. Joshua Slocum did not like steam on boats very much. Other than in a kettle.

I only yielded to power because I physically could not do sail anymore.

So eras slipping faster than I can adjust to them. I do feel we are losing something but, realize you can’t lose what you never knew.

When the Founders wrote the Bill of Rights, it did not even apply to all the residents of the country at the time. Only a certain subset...

Tom, Thanks to the link for the AC boats. Excellent video!

Baxter, I was rooting for that girls team also! The snipe is a great boat--there are still wooden plans available, or you can buy two almost complete boats for $250 vs an almost new one for $10,000 (which seems like a bargain in today's competitive sailing world. Problem is you have to live where there is a Snipe class to get the most out of the boat. New new glass ones are very sophisticated and far more complex. I have sailed a Snipe a couple of times- you have to be quick. Thanks for bringing these up!

Sandy you are forgiven.

I have never yet been out on a sail boat. been saying I need too for 10 years but still have not gotten to it. I do think that the monohulls make for better watching of the races but tech waits for no man. It is amazing what these boat can do , but no place for downriggers so no real use in the real world Smile.

Kind of like ferriars. Look cool go fast but would only lead to my imprisonment. better stick to trucks.

Well, as the apparent elder statesman of what some have called self loathing, I can happily say we can now get back to boats.
