My wife and I typically cruise the ICW. We’ve been as far up as Baltimore, and down as far as St. Augustine, and we’re thinking of hitting up some new grounds.
We watched a dated show called “On The Waterways” narrated by Jason Robards, where they cruised over 25,000 miles. (Google it, it’s pretty cool).
Anyway, we were knocked out by the Hudson River segment, and wondered if anyone has experience and/or advice. Dependent on this Covid thing, We’re thinking of late July or early August.
Thanks |

A lot of history along the Hudson. We enjoyed a week at Liberty Landing Marina (on the Jersey side, across from Manhattan) after cruising down the Hudson. Take your time and pull in at the many towns along the river. Since you are going that way, if time allows, cruise on up to Waterford, take a left, and spend some time cruising the Erie Canal. Our preference was the western portion of the canal (more towns and closer together) - we spent about a month and a half on the Erie Canal and Hudson River. Great time! |

Judy and I took our sailboat up from the Chesapeake through the Eire Canal a few years ago. Actually, we did most of the Great Loop. Though this was a few years ago, I doubt much has changed.
Here's the story of our Great Loop trip which includes the trip up the Hudson River and through the Eire Canal. And a lot more. You get to read the chapters you want.

We put in at the Liberty state park in Jersey City. Liberty landing state park is close by and has fuel, spectacular views of NYC at night. They have water taxi service a lot of different points in NYC. We got a rental car and I took the truck and trailer up to Rouces Point New York at the northern end of Lake Champlain.
You can just drive up to Rouces Point if you wanted drop off your truck and trailer as there are a number of marina's up there with ramps and storage. Then take the train which stops at Rouces Point and get back down to NYC and get a taxi then water taxi back to the marina. We wanted to do that but our dog was not allowed on the train. We went up the Hudson and then through the Champlain canal and up Lake Champlain which is a great trip. Make sure you run with the tide no matter which direction you chose when traveling the Hudson. It has a strong tidal influence to put it mildly. There is much to see West Point, Kingston, Coeyman's Landing marina just to name a few of the places. If you want I think we have pictures in Will-C's photo album on this site. Another resource is tug44.org on the internet. Or search the travels of Tug44. He has an extensive photo albums and commentary located there on almost all the New York canals. His site is worth the visit. It's a great trip, it can get pretty hot up there in August. Safe travels,

We had planed an Erie Canal Cruise this late summer/early fall. That is on hold now until rules etc are clearer. I would say less than 50% for our participation at this time. _________________ Bob Austin

Probably folks should not plan on doing any part of the Erie Canal this year unless they are New York State residents and are satisfied to whatever section the decided to open up.
See this release from the Canal Corporation. _________________
