I have Lenco trim tabs were installed when I purchased my boat in 2004. I just realized one of the tabs is not working. I took a look at it today and the port tab does not move. Looking at the wire that comes through the transom into the top of the actuator I see a small break in the wire sheath. I am thinking water has gotten inside through this break and it is corroded.

My options seem to be:
1) Take it apart and see if I could make it work
2) replace the one actuator
3) replace the whole system.

The control switches work but some of the led indicators don't work anymore.
So, has anyone taken one apart and made it work again?
Has anyone replace just one actuator?

Thanks for your opinions,
Steve

No harm in taking it apart. If you cannot repair it, and get it water right again, then you will have to buy a new one.

Once water gets inside of the accentuate, (if this has happened, it is probably toast or at least not reliable. At 16 years, that would be $10 a year for the accentuate (replacement in the $160 to $170 range.)

I have taken a Lenco apart, and have a number of photos on my CBRAT photo page posted of what's inside a the actuator. Please klick on my photo album to the left and see if the photos can help you. Feel free to email me if your have any questions. I'm happy to provide my phone number via PM if you would like to chat.

Good luck with your project.

I replaced one; ordered it somewhere off the web. Simple to replace especially if your wires from the control switches had the same connectors the new one came with. Of course my old ones did not (probably the same for you considering your vintage), so I think I used a standard (shrink-wrap-heat-expanding-sealing-glue) crimp connector cutting off the new fancy waterproof connector supplied. Taking it apart would be fun for me but I doubt one could ever get it waterproofed again for any period of time.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the information. I went out this morning and was able to pull the cable from the helm to the transom and remove the actuator without removing the fuel tank.
I have a couple of pictures in my album on page 2. There is a cut in the wire sheath just before the actuator and it does look like it let water in. The side of the motor below where the wires enter is rusted.

I have decided to go ahead and replace with a new one, but looks like it might take 3 weeks to get here from Amazon.

With that much rust on the motor (and you don't know what it is like on the gear end) I would definitely replace the whole unit. You can probably use the old wire, to pull the new wire.

I pulled up the 101 accentuator on Amazon, and it said "cannot ship to your location". I have never seen that before.

Try Hodges Marine, I have used them in the past, and had excellent results. Of course that I am in Fl means that I get the product in one to 2 days.

I have recently had to bypass items I regularly buy on Amazon, because they were out. I found alternate sources which were cheaper and much faster. I had an order delivered in less than 2 days. Amazon alternative was about 2 weeks.
