1/2" 8 strand nylon anchor line $0.66/foot
my tired old anchor line isn't working to good in my windlass anymore. I wanted to try some 8 strand line but didn't want to gamble 100's of dollars that it would work well in my windlass.
After scouring the internet I found a source for 1//2 8 strand nylon anchor line for $0.66/foot and ordered a 100'. If this stuff works good, I'll order up a couple of hundred more feet and splice it .

Oh well, you still have the bucket.
I'm using that 8 plait stuff through my windlass now. It lays into the locker better than the 3 strand and grips just fine in the gypsy. The only problem with it is the splice to the chain is bigger and doesn't want to go through the gypsy as easily. When it gets there I have to flip the switch from up to down to up real quick to bounce the chain. I think it sucks it down between the plates a little deeper for a second. I'll probably bust the windlass doing it one of these times. |

well, the 8 braid didn't work to good in the Powerwinch Sportfish 450 windlass. The gypsy grabbed a hold of it to good, it would wrap around and jam up. I don't know if it was my windlass or the quality of the line that was causing the jam up but-. Now for plan B, going to splice up some nice custom 8 plat dock lines.
I washed the snot out of my old anchor line with some laundry soap and fabric softener and then added a gadget that causes the line to enter the gypsy at a better angle. works good now |

I have 8 braid for my Lewmar 700. Seemed to work good at first, although I had to be careful it didn't get tangled up coming back out of the anchor locker. However as I am going in to my 4th or 5th year with it, I find it slips more in the windlass. I suspect the braid has worn down in a few areas and the windlass gypsy just can't get a good bite. Seems like using the manual method for lowering/retrieving an anchor has its advantages. |

Thought I got a good deal on a Garmin Echomap UHD 94SV with transducer for $750 from West Marine, but they are $700 at the GPS Store. Looks like a few Garmin models are on sale. I'm wondering if I should have hone with the GPSMAP 742xs Plus for $750.

That would depend on what your future plans are. If you want radar, then the 742 might be better. But for a general chart plotter, down and side scan, its hard to beat the Echomap series. Also the $750 may not have included charts. You have to watch the "bundles" and see if the transducer and what maps or charts are included. Generally the even number tend to be with coastal charts. The odd number the lake charts/maps.
Size always matters, and 9" gives two nice side by side display. We have the EchoMap 94 on my son's 25--works well. _________________ Bob Austin
