We're going diving on a friend's boat tomorrow while ours remains in the shop. In spite of a broken drive shaft during our last run, we had a good dive. We visited Hermosa Beach Artificial Reef, about a mile north of where the shaft split.

Nice photos!

In general, are the fish on artificial reefs protected from fishing and spear fishing?

Thanks!

The small reef fish aren't, but the Giant Sea Bass have been on the Protected Species List since 1982 and the Broomtail Groupers have been protected since 1950.

Pacific 101, you take some great pics. Hope to see more of them as soon as your engine is fixed.

To show how much I know, which pictures are of the Giant Sea Bass and which of the Broomtail Groupers? Sorry, I can't tell the difference in your pics.

Those were all Giant Sea Bass. We sometimes see the groupers with the GSB. They are about the same size. Some of the GSBs are over five feet long and 500+ pounds.
