I know we used a King topper to work with in our Venture. |

If you want to "cover" the V berth you will need a full king. But, why cover all of the V berth--you don't sleep in the corners.
As for sheets, we use Queen size, and tuck in the extra up top. We use sleeping bags, and at place like lake Powell, often just sleep with a queen sheet on top, and then a "fleece" to cover parts if they get cold. _________________ Bob Austin

We used the 2" Memory foam topper, we also replaced the factory foam with the softer green foam from Joan Fabrics. We used queen sized memory foam and used the factory foam as a pattern to make two halves. To have full coverage, the outside corners of the foam were glued on with spray glue (outside the yellows line). The cover is a home made slip cover with velcro at the end. Like Bob, we sleep better on the boat than at home.

By suggestion of my upholstery guy I purchased two 8 inch twin memory foam mattresses when they went on sale. He cut and contoured the foam so it matched the shape of the hull thus increasing the surface area for full coverage. The two cut pieces were then covered in the same Sunbrella material and color to match the rest of the boat. $$$ for sure but well worth the cost. _________________ Jay

Resurrecting this thread as we are looking to replace our bedding foam. Ideally I'd like to stay at about the same thickness, and just reuse the upholstery. We tend to like our beds on the more firm side, as opposed to super soft. From what I'm reading it looks like Memory Foam gets the vote. So for those that have done this, what is the best way? In wanting to stay with about the same thickness and placing it all back inside our current zippered upholstery (except for the middle cushion, which we'll have to remove staples and restaple), can we find memory foam thick enough, or is it better to get one layer of regular foam, then some memory foam, that placed together would be the current thickness? (Haven't measured it yet, but assume around 5") Colby |

Colby, we have put memory foam on top of all of our mattresses, in the C Dory and RV. We like the "cushion" under the Memory foam. Marie likes it softer than I do, but the compromise "memory foam" works for both of us.
You can get memory foam certainly up to 8" thick or more. (Often the thicker are hybrids) --We have 4" on top of the standard cushions in the C Dory 25--3" in the RV. Our sleep number beds at home have about a 1" layer of memory foam on top of the mattress...
We use an electric carving knife or very sharp fish fillet knife to.cut the foam. You can glue it to make the shape you want. Measure the bunk--I believe we have a King side ways in our 25. The 22 is a little narrower-and I believe a queen sideways will work.
Re-stapling is no problem. 3/8" works. We use an electric staple gun, and Monel metal staples. Monel metal does not rust--the SS staples will rust. |

We replaced the old factory foam in the sunbrella with new foam from Sailrite, they have many different ones to choose from, all different densities. We were having winter mildew problems underneath so Dana put some of that 3/4" spider webby stiff airflow stuff under and that cured the mildew problems. Then she made up 1.5" memory foam toppers, that did not work for my 200# so she changed my side to a thicker memory foam and now it is great.
I did cut hatches into the v-berths and removed the foam under so Dana split the long cushions in half for easier access.
The electric carving knives work amazingly. _________________ Micah Curtis and Dana, RN

Colby,
We use a $79 3" memory foam gel mattress 'topper' on top of the berth cushions with a zipper washable cover as we find the 4 cushions that make up the berth too disjointed. We replace the topper every 4 years or so. You might consider trying that as a cheap experiment. If it doesn't fully work, you could still replace all your berth foam and use it as a topper.

We're looking at possibly getting 2" memory foam with gel and 2" standard polyurethane foam I believe. Found some at Verlo Mattress today. Plans are to take the old foam up maybe as early as tomorrow and compare, and if we still like it, go ahead and have them cut it for us. We'll get a King size piece that will fit our dimensions, and they only charge $20 to cut it, so worth it to let them do it. Colby |
