Has anyone connected a VHF radio with AIS to their MFD (chartplotter)

Connecting a Standard Horizon GX2200 VHF with GPS and AIS receiver to a Garmin chartplotter Echomap Plus?

How was the AIS performance?

Works great! Thumbs Up
I can sit in the slip & watch tankers come into the inlet.
The first time the collision alarm that you haven't set up properly goes off it will scare the S___T out of you!!

I wired the same radio to my Garmin 3210 and it worked great for a while and then just quit sharing the data. I disconnected the main plug on the back of the Garmin and found one pin that was broken off and shorter than the rest. I figured that is the problem and have not yet checked the wire splices. I will get around to it soon. It was really quite a cool thing to have.

I had to order a special cable that plugs into the back of my new Simrad MFD and then goes to individual wires for the Standard Horizon end.

Brent, Are you asking about a VHF with AIS recieve which is the more common type, or are you asking for performance of a VHF with an AIS transmit/recieve system, a less common device with a more complex system?

Hi Harvey

VHF radio with AIS receiver

I was planning to upgrade radio to SH GX2200 with DSC and AIS receiver and interface to a Garmin Echomap Plus MFD and gain AIS overlay

I have the earlier model radio (without internal GPS), and it's connected to my Garmin GPSMAP via the older NMEA 283 (I believe) system. Works well. Hardest part is just figuring out which wires connect to which wires. Have wiring diagrams from both your radio and MFD, and study closely which tiny wire is which. If you're MFD is like my GPSMAP 541 or 840, you can turn the AIS repeater on or off. It is definitely nice having the targets pop up on the larger MFD screen, than the tiny VHF screen. But if you are in a crowded marina where everyone seems to leave their AIS on, it's also nice to turn off the display of targets. If both your electronics have the newer 2000 network system, it's just easy plug and play, if you have the proper backbone cables. Colby

The NMEA protocols are 0183 (released in March of 1983) which is a simple network. The second is the 2000 which uses the backbone. Unfortunately not all brands are fully compatible in either protocols. But the 0183 is more likely to be shared. Nothing wrong with 0183--just requires some soldering, or making small wire connectors (soldering is fine, as long as you "splint" the joint with adhesive shrink wrap.

We have used older and smaller Garmin MFD to show only the O183 data from the Standard Horizon radio. That keeps the clutter from AIS off the Primary chart plotter used for navigation.

Bob is correct (as usual Smile ) I meant to say 0183. I used small wire solderless connectors with mine. The kind that are usually used with telephone wire.
