So in one of my senior moments, I wanted to note the engine hours on our 2004 22 Cruiser, with a 2004 Honda 4-stroke, when I laid it up for the winter. So I switched on the ignition, noted hours at some 500--and then left the boat for the winter, leaving the ignition on. After replacing the dead batteries, I find that the dash-mounted meter (tach) is reading 1600 hours. Is there a way to zero out this reading or to adjust it to show actual hours?

Tavi,
Not much that can be done to reverse the hour meter. One solution may be to replace the tachometer/hour meter and disclose the hours to the next buyer. I replaced the tach on my son's boat, because the tach was acting up. I used a black magic marker and clearly wrote the previous hours on the back side of the new tach. He has a written document (from me) with the new tach manual that states the previous engine hours before I installed the tach. The next buyer gets this document, with all of the other boat documents.

I believe that the 2004 90's should read the true engine hours from the ECM, with dealer diagnostic software. Many of the engines will categorize the hours by RPM--for example less than 500 RPM (not running most likely) Less than 1000 RPM, less than 1500, etc.

If so, you can record that number in your log--and then subtract the real number, so you will always have a constant, which you subtract from the the visualized LCD hours. Some older analogue hour meters could be run backward, but not true of the digital meters.

tavi-

My 2005 Yamaha 90's ECU would not only list the hours at each rpm category, but the diagnostic unit at the dealer would print it out, providing the owner with a written documented record to keep. This could then be passed on to the new owner.

The ECU, of course, is the computer that runs the fuel injection, spark advance, and all the rest of the engine control variables.

The real question would be if your 2004 Honda had some sort of ECU to record all the data.

I don't think Honda added EFI until about 2009 or so.

I bought the 2005 Yamaha because it was the first year that the Yamaha was offered with fuel injection and electronic control.

Honda added EFI several years later, but I'm not sure of the exact year.

A Honda 2004 model does NOT read from the ECM [exception BF 130 ] . Thats a carbureted Honda on your 22' and if you change tachs it will start at zero. Best to just note the hours to the best of your recollection and have a good idea of where you stand .
FYI Yamaha and Suzuki will read on a laptop[with their proprietary software of course] from the early 2000s . Mercury and Honda came to the digital party later on small motors .

Joe, Sea Wolf;

Careful of which you speak. My 2005 Honda 150 has fuel injection as do the 2004 and later 130 and 135 models. It's true that I don't have direct access to the on-board computer, but the engines are fuel injected.

As for the smaller engines, the 40 up to 90, I believe fuel injection came later.

Re: The EFI status on various Honda engines.

My reference was to his 2004 Honda 90 hp and my 2005 Yamaha 90 hp engines and their history during that period.

They were the primary competitors for purchase for the C-D 22s during that time, when I was shopping for a replacement for my aging 1987 Evinrude 2-stroke 90 hp motor.

No reference was intended toward other Honda or Yamaha motors of different hp ratings.

Sorry if my remarks were written in a. way that could be misconstrued otherwise.
