Why would anyone buy new?

Maybe you don't live near mechanic or have capabilities to do the work yourself
I'm a big fan of buying used but in good condition.
Something that's like new but already has those inevitable initial dings and scratches that you'd feel bad about causing _________________ Weeki Wachee

1. You can afford it.
2. Do not want to be walking in someone elses footprints.
3. Enjoy commisioning from the fiberglass up.
4. Want specific build mods that the factory will do.
5. Afraid of "pre-owned" stuff, don't want surprises.
6. Plan long term ownership so depreciation is not an issue.
7. Want to have warrantee coverage.
And there might be other reasons.
Harvey

Have a friend that's building a kick ass boat bar
Actually popped a mold from a lap sided hull
Just the raw mahogany material for the top was $1800
And this initial pic is nothing
You ought to see it now...

correct me if I'm wrong...Isn't there only one layout on a 16'? Two seats in a tiny cabin. They are all the same. |
Well, you're right (correct) that both configurations have two seats. Also, the hulls are the same. Having owned both a cruiser and an angler 16 footer I can say that they are significantly different in many ways. size of the cabin, placement of the cabin on the hull and the consequent different size of the cockpit, storage or bunk, table or none, access to manual wipers and window opening , and, perhaps finally, balance . For what it's worth I love them both and miss them dearly. _________________ MartyP

Rumor has it that 16 sold within a few days. Looks nice!
Also, Harvey, good list! I would add to that list that it can be hard to find used boats with all the latest, current model outboards and electronics. Sure late model used boats come up every now and then, but usually not discounted too drastically from new. Most who can afford the price of a 1-2 year old used boat will just go a little further and buy new, and get the bonus of picking colors, options, power, etc. Financing on new might also be easier depending on your bank. I like to justify the new purchase price of my 22 as being roughly equivalent to a loaded Suburban at the time. We'll see which holds value better after 10 or 20 years!

Thanks Mike. It wasn't a complete list, but mostly my reasons...IF...,
Are you taking any bets on which will hold the better value? A good comparison, but my money is on the C-Dory.

Thanks FIMAN1. I saw that listing but am out of town for work and am unable to see it. That would have been nice to check out.
.... my bet is the C-Dory will hold its value far better than an SUV

The historical evidence on this site proves the C-Dory wins most all of the time, though specific boat to car comparisons are not always made.
The NADA and Kelley's Blue Book and similar comparisons show that the C-Dory used prices are usually much higher in practice than the books listed prices which work almost exclusively on mathematical projections rather than sales reports.
I bought a 1987 C-Dory 22 Cruiser for $20,500 in 1998 and sold it 17 years later for $22,500, albeit with considerable improvements having been added. Try that with a car or truck!

When you're actually ready to pull the trigger watch the For Sale ads on this site like a hawk. Something will pop up if you're patient and ready to act.
I may as well spill the beans here. I wasn't quite ready to buy (have the cash but still 4 years from retirement) but I saw the ad on here for the '89 22' cruiser in Ohio for $15k. Called the guy, got lots of additional info and pics, sent him a deposit and my wife and I will be heading out there on the 1st to pick it up. Happy days!!!
We live in Tucson so there's not a lot of water around us unless we want to travel 3.5 hrs one way. I was really going to wait until one year out from retirement just because the boat won't get used as much as I'd like but, now I figure that'll be a few years of good "mod" time.
Our future plans are to "boaterhome" around the US. |

Aaron, place a wanted to buy ad in the boats wanted section. That how we got our 22. It never went on the market. |
