Gary,
Thanks for sharing your experiences as a newcomer. I've had very pleasant phone and email conversations with Harvey, as well as email exchanges with Dr. Bob. Looking forward to meeting you and others at the FHCBGT!

Harvey, count me in for overnighting Thursday--unless we get wind like we had two days ago! And I really appreciate all your energy on this, and many other Brat threads.
Pat, thank you for tossing a few big cedar chunks on this modest campfire. I also believe these gigs are a lot of work, and I've had it easy just showing up when all the details were attended to and the table was set--lately by Pat and Patti at Bellingham, and Greg and Cindy for several years at Friday Harbor. And the irony, it seems to me, is that Greg and Cindy have a lot more to attend to, with jobs and a young-un, certainly than I do.
My feeling is not many want to be saddled with the responsibility of hosting a rendezvous. Who wants to supply answers to 50 questions for four months, make phone calls and email inquiries, secure and tote two 25 pound tubs full of plates and pot luck stuff, ascertain people know where to go, when, furnish breakfast goodies, a glossary of the town with things to do, and be the point person when things go astray? And more. That used to work, and may again at some future gig. But this is a new day, it seems to me, and we're a little different than, say, a group that attracts 100+ boats, has a factory sponsor, and take-charge guys who want the wheel.
I think what we're doing this time is the most reasonable and democratic way to create a fun and successful gathering, one where no one person or couple feels burdened, then burned out. Having said that, Pat, I like how you've loosely outlined out the days as you have. Friday conversation and dinner where you choose. If someone has called for reservations somewhere, share that information. I can get nametags and a felt pen. And by the way, I'm bringing my bicycle again and plan to ride the island Friday if it's not raining. Last year three of us had great big fun cycling. Saturday we can walk around town or do whatever sounds fun. Don't forget the farmers market. I might take a $5 taxi to Roche to explore. Harvey or Pat, who can I call for Auxiliary inspections?
We can talk potluck contributions right up till kickoff.
Then on Sunday when we break camp it's fun for some of us who're inclined to cruise to Sucia, Jones, Deer Harbor, or anywhere else, and add an exclamation point to time well spent. Finally, Pat, we won't let this event go by the wayside. No friggin' way. I think we have the energy and commitment to make this a cooperative undertaking from this year forward.

I llike the way everyone is chipping in to do a little.
I will put together a tentative "To Do" list by the weekend.

Hi Colby, I'm hoping for the "You Show Up 50" part. See you next time.

I will make arrangements for the US Coast Guard Aux Vessel Safety Inspections. This is a program I am seriously a proponent of. It's FREE, It's voluntary, and It's helpful AND, if you want to avoid the likelihood of being boarded at sea, having that current VSI sticker on your port side window can get you a smile and a wave instead of a notice to heave to and prepare for boarding.
I have a friend here in Sequim who does the inspections and for anyone local he will b e glad to come to where your boat is. PM me for contact info, or PM me your phone and I will pass it on to Bob.
For anyone interested in what it involves, here is a link to the USCGAux VSI info page and list of what the inspection involves.
http://cruising.coastalboating.net/Seamanship/Safety/USCGCourtesyInspection.html
For anyone not able to be at the FHCBGT (aahheemmm there), there is a site where you can request a VSC (Vessel Safety Check) from a local facility inspector.

We will have Vessel Safety Checks available. The gentleman I talked to would like an idea of how many boats want inspections, and if we prefer Friday or Saturday. he said last couple of years they have been doing about 20 boats. That is a big day for 3 people so they might spread the load a bit more.

Hi Harvey,
Chalk C Sharp down for one of the inspections. Either day is fine for us.
Thanks!

A-Hoy There Maties,
I reviewed the conversation threads for our trip and have developed a tentative "To Do" list. I can't see a way to attach a list.
I am new at this, so maybe if you PM me, I can send the excel sheet.
Copying a pasting the list doesn't seem to work real well.

It looks like Limpet is in. Put me down for a Friday or Saturday CG inspection.
I usually wait for the last minute to sign up for anything (if I even sign up before I show up). That being said, I'm planning on hosting next year's Seattle Boat Show dinner get together (dates to be announced). How's that for planning ahead? I would have done it this year but I found out too late that Beth booked 10 days in Hawaii during the boat show and I had to go.

Hey Mark, Sure sorry you "had to go" to that thing in Hawaii. I'd a been glad to go for you, but then I would have missed all those great classes at the SBS this year.
I looks like we may be able to have SG VSC inspections done on both days. There will be a sign up sheet on the dock to sign up for a time slot. I still need to have those interested please continue to post for that.
Looking forward to a great time with great folks.
Harvey

Daydream would like an inspection.
In the interest of keeping this gathering simple, I think people should plan on making their own coffee and fixing their own breakfasts. If anyone else wants to take breakfast on that is certainly fine. _________________

Pat, I think that's a good idea. Keeps things simple like you say. We can just mingle and visit sipping home brewed coffee or bourbon while we talk boats, breakfast or brunch.
Harvey, thanks for your inspection connections!
Keith, thank you for your to-do list. And Mark, gosh, I think you'll get a good boat show rendezvous response. Especially a year in advance. That should entitle you to another shoe box full of last-minute signup coupons. |
